Is this TRUE?!

Ok, so I received an email from a salon that I visited a while back, and they said that a bunch of designers, including Maggie (which is what I plan to get) is increasing their price 20-30% starting Aug 1 due to the labor issues in China. Has anyone else heard this?! I really hope it BS, but they sent "the letter" they received supposedly. Seriously, if this is a scam from that salon, I will be taking it to the media, because this salon was AWFUL to me. :S

Haven't heard that, but makes me kinda glad I had to pay in full for mine when I ordered it.

  • I did read a story a couple of weeks about China changing its labor laws so some manufacturing might be returning to the US because it will be more cost effective, so this is very possible.

  • I haven't heard anything, but my best advice would be to do some checking around. Or you could always go into a store that is an authorized Maggie Sottero dealer and ask them if it is true.
  • not sure, but this is awesome news I think! We should stop exploiting the Chinese people and pay them fair wages. And of course bring some jobs back to the states!
  • I've heard of the labor issues, but it was mainly in the IT and auto sectors since these workers get paid very little for very grueling work. Garment workers are generally paid higher than minimum wage due to the skills required. It's still a small amount when compared to America, but it isn't so low that it's causing any strikes or worker unhappiness. Also, most of the garment factories have mulltiple manufacturing sites in other countries to help offset any wage increases or political unrest in one country (i.e., Vietnam, Phillippines, India, Bangladesh..). A 20-30% price increase seems pretty steep and unreasonable for any business to keep customers. It'd be great to see jobs return to the US, but I don't see it happening anytime soon. There are still many up and coming countries overseas who want to be the next China.
  • When I ordered my dress in 2008, prices were going to rise August 1st, so it's totally possible that that is happening again this year.

  • I just did an internet search and I saw two post by other brides in 2008 and 2009 stating they were told something similar. So perhaps the Maggie Sottero dresses keep going up every year and this is just the excuse they are using or perhaps its a ploy to get you to buy the dress now versus later. I agree with pp, check with a different salon. I'm think its ploy because I just bought a Maggie Sottero dress today and the shoppe I bought my dress from never said anything like that and I was even on the fence about buying the dress to the point where she went to her manager to see if she could do anything on the price, they ended up selling me the dress as a sample so I got 20% off. I only paid $614 for the Grace dress.
  • Ok ladies. Thanks! :D
