Wedding dress's make me feel big!

Sure they squeeze you in,  but I am a size 12, so why does the dress tag say size 20????

I think the wedding dress sizes should be rewritten like the clothing store 'Torrid' does... I am a size 0 there in Torrid!

Re: Wedding dress's make me feel big!

  • I understand, I am normally a size 2 or 4 but my dress was a 10! Apparently they haven't changed the sizing since the 50's.

The 50's??? That's insane! Times have changed and ladies have become a tad bit more moody about their weight and clothing size...

  • Nothing says weight complex like sticking the 19050's sizing!
  • I'm a 14/16 and I mostly fit into 18 or 20 size dresses.  You just have to get over what it says on the tag and pick out what looks good on you.
  • I'm also a 14/16 generally and my wedding dress is a 20. I knew going in that I was going up at least 2 sizes or more. It's how it is, generally, the more expensive/designer the clothing the higher the size you are in it. And the less looks they have in your size. You just can't let it get to you. I know that it's hard, but, especially in this case, it's only a number. I fully admit to cutting size tags out of things on occasion, and if you're not going to resell it, then do that if it helps.

Plus, I only wear about a size up in most vintage clothes, and you have to remember that up through the mid to late 60s they wore a heck of a lot more under their clothes than we would every think to wear. Spanx are nothing to those rubber girdles.

[QUOTE]A lot of industries have switched to what is called vanity sizing, but the bridal industry has not. <strong>Go by what fits, not the number on the tag.</strong>

    <div>Best advice I had going in!</div><div>
</div><div>I'm probably going to get slammed here, but I'm normally a 4/6 and I'm a 6/8 in bridal sizes.  My consultants all todl me to go with my largest measurement and then get the rest fitted to me.  I have to say that since hearing advice like that, going shopping with advice like that has made my wardrobe mindset change completely and made me look 100% better and more confident!  </div>
  • I have size 12 bridesmaids who had to order size 20 in their dresses, one girl, a size 0/2, had to get an 8. They were freaking out at first, but they told us to go with measurements, not tag sizes, so we'll see when they come in.

I am a street size 16, and they seemed to think the 18 will fit in my dress, but it is a corset back, and that's what they say makes the difference. The sample was a 20, and really big on me.

Easier to take in then take out...............that's what I keep hearing, but I can tell you, my girls were all talking about gym going and dieting after seeing their size numbers. lol. It has nothing to do with weight, for the most part, but they weren't happy at first.

  • What I always tell myself both in real life and wedding dress shopping... No one sees the size tag but you. If you feel great, you will look great! Good luck shopping!

  • Vanity sizing kills me. The numbers are arbitrary anyways. Find something that fits and feels good and don't worry about the number.

I'm a 7 in street sizes, the dress I ordered the sample size 8 fit me perfect, but samples are usually stretched out from being tried on. When I was measured two of my measurements were perfectly in between a 10 and 12 and the third was perfectly between a 12 and 14. The consultant basically told me to pick whichever of the four sizes I thought would fit me best and she was somewhat confused. I ended up going with the 10 since my biggest measurement was my hips and I got a ballgown with a wait above the hip. Normally you're supposed to go with the biggest measurement then alter it to fit. And as someone who struggled with an eating disorder and is still very body conscious, this was really difficult for me to stomach. But honestly, don't fixate on the numbers. They are truly arbitrary and the sizes are inflated but the number associated with them stays the same. That's vanity sizing and it's why in some brand I can wear a size three and in others I need a nine. Breath, find something you feel beautiful in, and don't stress yourself out. You'll look amazing no matter what.

  • Yup, it happens. My dress is 3 sizes bigger than I wear anywhere else, but I love it and it flatters all my best parts so that's really all that matters.

  • I can totally understand your feeling, but isn't it more important to dins a dress that fits and you feel beautiful in then the actual size of the dress?!
  • OP - I was in a similar situation. I felt very big trying wedding dresses on and the sizing did not help. There is hope - when I finally found the one for me, I no longer felt like a giant cupcake! Good luck.

  • I didn't find that to be true at all. I am a 12 and my wedding dress was a 12. My dress is a Mori Lee for Madeline Gardiner. Maybe it's by designer the sizes and style that depends on the sizing.

  • I totally hear where you are coming from.  I was in an even worse place because I *ahem* have an excessive hourglass shape.  Think comic books (it makes my geeky fiance happy, who am I to complain).

I really have to range around sizes (I can be anything from a size 8 to a size 14 depending on the cut and peice of clothing) to fit the different areas.  When it came to my wedding dress, they had to order a size 20 for my 'top'.  I almost fainted.

Now they are taking in the waist well over 10 sizes.  Thank god I got a ballgown and they don't have to worry about hips.  I think my alterationists wince every time they see me coming.

  • I think it depends on the designer.  I got a Mori Lee dress and it was pretty close to my street size.  That being said, my street size changes depending on where I buy stuff because I'm three different sizes in three different areas so it's rare for clothes to fit me correctly anyway.

I went with a Demetrios dress and I had a similar experience (I'm usually a 10 in pants and my dress is a 10).  Sizing in bridal gowns, just like in all clothing, varies by designer.  Buy what fits you and move on.

  • Eeek! I am going dress shopping on Friday and I am nervous. I am also very hourglass. I am a large on top, a size 14 hips but a super small waist. I am also only 5' tall so very sort. I have no idea how all of this is going to work.

It depends on the designer. I bought a casablanca dress and I bough the same exact size as my street size. I was shocked so I asked "are you sure?"" cuz I kept hearing horror stories about sizing. She explained that most designers don't sell 0 or 2 size dresses so a 0 is really a 4 then in dress sizes.

I think it actually depends on the dress.   Some dresses by the same designer in the same size fit me dramatically differently.

    I was the same. My dress I having to be taken in A LOT but it was difficult to button the top because the bra they gave me to try on was too small, cupwise. The girls were all the way up under my chin, and the band size was too big so there was extra material in the way. I felt much better when my bra came in from amazon, I didnt want to take it off! But my dress and my street size are the same, but most of the dresses I tried on were 48 sizes too big, so it was hard toget a feel for what they really looked like. I think it has a lot to do with the designer and were they are from, so don't get down over a silly number! That's why there are people who make a living altering wedding dresses ;

  • I had to get an 8, but I'm really a 4. But it doesn't matter, I know I'm definitly a 4 and the dress makes me feel pretty (no one has to know it's an 8).
