Random Acts of Kindness

So.. I have been scrambling to catch up with classes and just drowning. Earlier today I realized my professor's weekly email had me on call today. I freaked and spent a few hours preparing.

Wouldn't you know before class he comes up and asks me if I am ready or I need more time? He knew about the death of my grandfather a couple weeks ago and knew I was still catching up. I am ready for the class and plan to get called on... but his simple moment- a rare one in law school- totally teared me up.

Anyone else experiencing random acts of kindness?

  • I gave a homeless guy 10 bucks the other day.  He had a flag and a sign.  He also looked sad.

I have my period this week so maybe it caused me to be sporadically compassionate :)

  • Ben and I received gifts from our registries from TWO knotties.  I won't tell who they are because maybe they'd like to stay anonymous :) But I was just really struck by how sweet that was.  I cried!

One thing I really, really want to do is to pay the tab of someone I see in a restaurant who's eating alone.  I always look for someone every time I go out, but I haven't found that person yet.

It wasnt in Boston actually.  I live near bedford and there is a vets hospital there.  Its mostly for veterans dealing with mental illness and alot of them are homeless or live in group homes.  I was shopping near there and he was standing at a traffic light.

It was something about his face.  It was really sad.  He had a Vietnam hat on and a pow thing on his jacket.  He smiled at me when he saw the 10 and said God Bless, but he still had the sad eyes.

  • Along the lines of buying meals for someone eating alone, I've bought breakfasts or put money towards the meals of WWII veterans (usually wearing hats or whatever proclaiming their service).  I go to their table and thank them for their service.  I had 2 grandfathers (Navy, Marine) and a grandmother (Marine) all serve in WWII as well as various great aunts and great uncles.  My brother is Navy and I'm grateful every day for his service.

  • I was leaving the grocery store the other day (one with a large, wide-open front door) and my bag tore, spilling stuff all over the entrance of the store and breaking my 3 wick glass candle-in-a-jar.  A man went in the store to get more bags, told them I needed another candle, and helped me pick up the glass and groceries.

  • H and I always try to leave a 25% tip. We don't have much money, and wish we could be the awesome diners who drop a huge tip just because, but we do what we can. Someday I will do it. People work hard for their money and deserve compensation for it. I was never a waiter but H was, so he definitely feels their pain.
  • FI and I met some friends for dinner at a gourmet pizza place downtown, and we only ate half the pizza. We decided to get gelato, but had to walk a ways. I gave a homeless guy the rest of the pizza and he was seriously thrilled. I got the feeling he was pretty hungry. FI was like "dude! I was gonna eat that- that was a $25 pizza" I just told him I think that guy needed it.

I gave a lady behind me at target the rest of my giftcard when I bought something. There was only a few bucks left on it, but she was happy about it. :)

Is it bad that I can't think of any random kind acts that anyone has done for me lately? Anna always leaves sweet comments on my facebook that make me smile- that counts!

  • I got a manicure and pedicure on Friday after work.  It ran late and I was there until almost 7:30pm when the place closed at 7pm.  The girl who did my nails let me stay and dry them again to be sure.  She then put some oil on my toes, wrapped my feet up in bags, and put my shoes and socks on for me (so I wouldn't mess up my hands).  I had already tipped her, but I want to go back and tip her more!

Your story reminds me of when my parents met my uncle (mom's bro) in Vegas a few years ago, and he took them out to eat at some schwanky restaurant.  They ordered Colby beef, Alaskan king crab, just a TON of really nice food and barely scraped the surface of what was brought to the table.  My dad said it was the best food he'd ever had in his life.

No one wanted to take the food back to the hotel though - and my uncle told their server to box up the food and keep it for himself.  He was really, really excited.

I'm that awkward tourist who unintentionally does nice things when I'm anywhere outside of Minneapolis.  I always hold doors open for people, smile and strangers if I make eye contact, etc. Just little things, but apparently that's not normal in the rest of the country ;)  People thought I was a freak the few times I went out east. ha.

Honestly I can't think of any random acts of kindness I've received lately other than the wedding. There were so many little things people did (like my dad who went and got me a straw from the bar while we were getting ready so I wouldn't 'ruin all of that lip makeup stuff.") :)

ETA: I have one!  Last week at the dog park one of the other 'regulars' walked over and picked up my dog's poop for me, because I was having a conversation with someone else. now that's nice.

I often eat out alone.  I need to move to your town!

Whenever I see women carrying their baby strollers up or down the subway stairs I help them if I can.  It really looks like it sucks, and I feel so bad for them.
  • This thread makes me sad because I can't think of the last time that I did something nice for someone who wasn't in my family or when I didn't think I would get something in return. I'm far too self involved. I need to make some changes. :)
  • I had breakfast at a local diner Sunday with my 2 daughters, their BFF, and BFF's mom.  An elderly couple was at the next table and finished before we did.  They stopped at our table to tell me and the other mom how beautiful the girls are and how lovely we all looked together.  They were the cutest couple, and left the diner holding hands.  It made we want to be a nice old person someday.

  • There is a homeless guy that takes care of 3 stray dogs on the corner outside of Target. Every time I go in I get him a jar of PB, a package of saltines, and a small bag of dog food and drop it off on my way out. I can tell he loves those dogs, and when people give him food he shares with them first. It breaks my heart.

Cew, maybe look into adopting a needy family for Christmas. There are usually local agencies or churches that can match you with someone. My parents did it when we were kids, and I still do it. Its great fun!

Oh, FI did the dishes the other day when I worked late. They were gross. It was random and extra kind of him.
