The Lovely Bones / Good Books

Okay, so I'm avoiding the Phillies game and wandered upon "The Lovely Bones" movie. Um! I'm at the scene where Mr. Harvey lures Susie into his creepy deepy room underneath the cornfield. It's making my skin crawl.

People really like this movie/book, right? I tried to read a few chapters of it and it upset me. I've now watched about fifteen minutes of the movie and it's killing me.

So, if you like this story, please tell me why. If you don't like this book, please recommend a book that you do like. I'm reading "The Time Traveler's Wife" right now. I hear it gets sad, but so far, I find it lovely.

OKAY - Susie just found a dead, decaying man in a dirty bathtub. What *is* this story?

Re: The Lovely Bones / Good Books

• I never saw the movie because the book depressed me too much. I read it when I went to visit a college boyfriend at his school, and didn't want to do anything else the rest of the weekend I was there because I was so sad.

I did love The Time Traveler's Wife, though. It does get sad, but it's oh so good.

It's a totally different vein of books, but have you ever read anything by Christopher Moore? My favorite it Lamb. It's amazingly hilarious--I don't think I've ever really laughed out loud at a book, and I was cracking up nearly the entire thing.
• I liked "The Lovely Bones", but it definitely gets to you sometimes.. I haven't seen the movie, because I heard it was terrible.

Saw "The Time Travelers Wife", it wasn't SO bad, but it wasn't great.. I haven't read the book.

I'm currently reading "Eat Pray Love". Won't see the movie until I'm done.
• I have not read Christopher Moore, but I do love funny!

I really like Bill Bryson and Mary Roach. They write nonfiction but in a completely hilarious way.

I loved the book and every other book I read by that author ( Alice Sebold).

I don't know if I can explain why. I know it's uncomfortable to an extent especially in the beginning. I guess for me, I just want to know about it and find that going through different thoughts and emotions while reading a book, is pleasurable in some way. I haven't seen the movie though.

Other good books that I HIGHLY recommend:

Then We Came to the End by Joshua Ferris
Lunar Park by Bret Easton Ellis
Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin
Something Blue by Emily Giffin
Baby Proof by Emily Giffin
Bitter is the New Black by Jen Lancaster
I Know This Much is True by Wally Lamb
She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb
Dark at the Roots by Sarah Thyre
Also anything by Augusten Burroughs and David Sedaris

ETA: Spelling
• Quite honestly I think the book sucked, I didn't even finish it which is a rare occurance for me.

As far as authors go, I like David Baldacci, Jack DuBrul, D!ck Francis, Catherine Coulter, Wilber Smith, and so many more. Can you tell I like to read?
• I'll have to look them up then--I like the funny, too.

Lamb is one of my favorite books of all time. The subtitle is "The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal." It's hysterical, and a really interesting perspective on Jesus. I really need to read it again.
• I watched the movie and read the book and I feel they were pretty much very identical just the timelines were more cohesive in the movie for viewing sake. I liked it, both the movie and the book.

I love to read. "The Time Traveler's Wife" is really out of character for me (I'm not a romance-y kind of reader). I actually haven't read any of the authors you just listed. I'll look into them :)
• LTZ, I LOVE Emily Giffin. She is my absolute favorite..
• I love Something Borrowed and Something Blue, too. I bought Baby Proof a while ago, but haven't read it yet. I need to dig it out. I like Emily Giffin, too.

Have you read Water for Elephants? I loved that book. It's by Sara Gruen.

ETA: My favorite book of all time is The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath...if you're not looking for "light reading."

Well I should probably point out that a lot of Catherine Coulters books are romance though she does have two series, one about some FBI agents and the other about a cop in the future that are less about the sex, more about the storeline lol.
• Emily Giffin is pretty great. I know it's considered chic-lit, but the way she writes I think it's much more.

Something Borrowed is being made into a movie that's supposed to come out next year actually.
• Oh and also, please, please read The Spellman series by Lisa Lutz. Absolutely hilarious.
• Yeah... I have very different reading tastes than most of you in here! Haha. I love Michael Crichton, crime/spy thrillers, mysteries, or science-y books. I think my all time favorite book is Jurassic Park - easily. Of course, I also harbor a deep and wonderful love for Harry Potter!
• I have nothing to contribute to this thread because I mostly read fantasy and sci-fi. >___< I think I have the worst taste ever.

No! What's good in the sci-fi world? I will stray from my comfort zone from time to time.

You must read this http://www.amazon.com/Her-Smoke-Rose-Up-Forever/dp/1892391201/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1287707976&sr=1-1

It's a collection of short stories and they are just literally amazing. I love to read but books don't usually "affect" me emotionally the same way movies and TV shows do but one of the stories in this made me cry like a baby. They're just so well written I can't even believe *flail*

My main thing is fantasy tho. http://www.amazon.com/Game-Thrones-Song-Fire-Book/dp/0553381687/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1287708067&sr=1-1 is book 1 in a really good series. It's very realistic, the plot is very easy to understand and not too magic heavy most of the time but there are a lot of underlying layers of complexity. plus HBO is making a TV series so if you read the books now you're in on the ground floor before it becomes mainstream next year hahahaha.

Ohh I like Crichton too! I love his book Prey. There is a really prolific author that writes medical thrillers that are pretty good but I can't for the life of me think of his name. From the list of authors that I mentioned quite a few of them are mystery writers. I pretty much read mystery and spy books too.

I haven't read "Something Blue" yet, I really want to. It's just so freaking expensive, and I can't rent from the library (thanks 11 year old cousin..).

I can't wait for the movie.. I'm hopeful.
• I wasn't a fan of the Lovely Bones, but I made myself finish it. I won't watch the movie.

Have you read The Hunger Games series? That's my current go-to recommendation.

[QUOTE]I wasn't a fan of The Lovely Bones, but I think I'm in the minority. I'm going to recommend the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon, though. Super, super good books.

I am going to second this opinion. I enjoy Nicholas Sparks, knowing full well that the endings will NEVER be happy.
• Does anyone read Jodi Picoult? I can think of Nineteen Minutes and Picture Perfect being among my favorites.

I know I mentioned it before, but for those of you who are regs on SB, I really think you'd like Jen Lancaster's books.
• Im a big fan of Tobsha Learner. She does super easy to read semi smutty like novels, and they are wonderful. Its great to sit down with an easy read sometimes. Soul Quiver and The Witch of Cologne are the best.
Mistress of the Art of Death, The Birth of Venus, DaVinci Code, Angels and Demons, Slammerkin, Why Courage Matters, The Lucifer Effect, Three Cups of Tea (BEST inspirational story EVER), Way of the Peaceful Warrior, Sacred Journey of the Peaceful Warrior, Geek Love, Straight up and Dirty, Celestine Prophecy, and The Great Gatsby.

Thats my top list.

I love that you all love books too. Makes my heart happy.

• Honestly, The Lovely Bones was by far the worst book I've ever read. I have never in my life wanted to stop reading a book before I finished it and I had to force myself to finish it by telling myself the ending would be satisfing. It wasn't.

When I saw they made it into a movie I decided I'd rather sit ass naked, covered head to toe in honey in the middle of a bear cave than go see it.

Don't think they'd post my review on a book cover!!

Sorry to those of you who liked it. It was just so depressing which is saying a lot coming from me because I am constantly reading suspense fiction.

• I forgot my book recommendation...

The Last Summer of Us by Ann Brashares. It's by the same author of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants which I never read but I loved this book. It was different from the books I typically read but I find my thoughts wandering back to this book a lot.

Some of my all-time favorite authors are Greg Iles (LOVE him), Karin Slaughter and Jane Green.
