Do you happen to know what a steroid shot will do during pregnancy? My sister is 33w and her blood pressure is crazy high (150/110) and they gave her a steroid shot to speed up the baby's development. Does that sound right?

Not babbs, but I believe that is to assist with lung development.

It helps develop their lungs.

not Babbs, but yes, that is exactly what they should do. At 33w, a little steriod will make a big diff in lung development. That way if they decide baby has to come out sooner rather than later for both their health, baby will be ready to breathe.

I guess you have your answer:) I had 2 of them, 24 hours apart. It develops their lungs. They made me swell bad too.

24 hours of urinating seems like it has to be hard to do.

No yet Babbs. They just discovered her BP yesterday. She had an u/s, steroid shot, NST and was given meds to bring down her BP. She is back at the hospital today but I am not sure what they are doing. What info does the 24 hour urine test give?

Protein in urine, from my understanding it can go hand and hand with high BP, which is not a good thing and they will deliver quickly after that. (pre-e) I have had to do 2 urine test since I have been here when my BP elevated.

the 24 hour urine test measures protein in the urine. I had to do it twice when I had kidney stones and it's a royal pain.

Cali, really it's not that hard:) With 2 babies jumping on my bladder I am up all the damn time. I hate collecting though, I couldn't imagine doing it at home and carrying the jug around everywhere I went.

I hate looking at mine and other people's pee samples when I go to the doctor. I can't imagine what 24 hours of pee looks like.

It's not pleasant and it has to stay on ice. GROSS!

Steroids will help stimulate the production of a protein called "surfactant" by the baby's lung cells. It increases surface tension in the alveoli so that when they are born, their lungs can stay inflated.This happens naturally during development by the body's own corticosteroids, but for potential premies, a little extra help with a steroid shot goes a long way.

Thanks everyone!Speaking of carrying pee around....I had to carry my bag of pee around the first day after the c/s. The nurses told me to be proud because I am a good pee'r. I just found it weird.
