our very good friends want us to split the costs of renting a house on the beach next summer for a week.  Problem is, it's 30 minutes from where we both live so it seems kind of lame to me.  Also, they have a 3 year old and plan to have an infant by that time.  I love their little boy, but do I want to spend $1000, to spend a weeks vacation 30 minutes from my house with two little ones?  I think my H wants to go, but I really think I'd rather spend the $ to do something else.

No.  Kids aside, why do they want to be 30 minutes from home?

I can sort of understand the 30 minutes from home, because people do that here. But 1000 is a lot for a non relaxing vacation.

$1000 to stay 30 minutes away.  Doesn't sound good to me. Before we had Andy, my H and I went to Mexico with our friends that had a 2 year old.  That aspect wasn't unpleasant.  We knew that we would be pretty much housebound for the majority of the time, but we had a house on the beach to ease that pain (we don't live 30 minutes from a beach, so, it probably was more exciting for us than it would be for you).Perhaps you could suggest an alternative location?

If it was for a weekend, sure (assuming you're not put off by the kid and infant being there during your vacation).  But for a whole week?  No thanks.
