registries - how many is too many?

The question is obvious, how many registries is too many? I considered posting on the ettiqutte board, but I didn't want to get ripped to shreds... :-)
I remember when my cousin got married a couple years ago they had 5 or 6 listed, and I felt that was way too many (and it was listed on a card in the invitation)

Where did ya'll register? How many stores did you register at? Other than your bridal shower, what did you do to let people know where you were registered at?

Thanks ladies!

I think 5 is the tipping point for "too many" from my perspective.  We registered at 4 stores, and that was more than enough.  I didn't have a shower, so all I had was a card in the invitation that referred guests to our website, and the registries were linked to on the website.

Right now we have 2 set up (Crate and Barrel and Bed, Bath & Beyond), and we may or may not do one more.  I added links to our registries on our website, and put the link in our save the date cards.

For our guests that don't get a save the date card, we'll probably add a little card in with the invitation with the wedding website/accommodation info.

I think that 2-4 is just fine... definitely make sure that OOT guests have a store close to them or are able to buy online though.

I agree 2-4 is fine.  I personally will only do 2 but that is because everyone we are inviting has one of those two stores near them.

I think 2-4 is fine. 4 might even be too many, depending on what you need and who you're inviting. I'd assume that at least one of the four is more "guy" related: tools, grill stuff, etc. Otherwise, I can't think of four stores with things I'd need. I struggled with overlaps with my 2 main registries.

Right now we are only planning on three: Bed Bath & Beyond, Target, and REI for camping stuff. That should probably cover everything, but if not we can always ad Macy's or something. I think most people I've seen have had two or three.

we did 4, mostly because our family is in different places and we wanted a good mix of local stores and online purchases to choose from.
they are listed under a link on our wedding website.

I agree with PP's. 2-4 is about right.  We did 3.  Target, Kohls, and Bed Bath and Beyond.  Though sometimes I wish we'd registered at Macy's, instead of Target.

Let people know via word of mouth. People will ask where you are registered if they want to buy you a gift from your registry. I've always been told it's bad etiquette or looks like you're fishing for gifts if you put where you're registered on your invitations.
