Overheard at the office

We're hosting trick-or-treaters in our office building today.  Super cute.

Just overheard the following convo take place:

little kid:  I WANT CANDY!
mom:  you already got some candy, let's go.
little kid:  NO!  I WANT CANDY!
mom:  Ok, if we go now, we can stop by McDonalds and get a chicken nugget Happy Meal.

Yell

Yeah, mechanically separated and deep fried chicken is way more nutritious than candy.

  • oh goodness.

And we wonder why america has an obesity issue
  • Soon it's going to be "If we go now, I'll give you $50."

  • Happy meal as a bribe for doing what mom says?  Dang.  And I thought not being in trouble was enough of a reward for doing what mom said.  I missed out.
  • I overheard this very recently - our CEO has decided to continue to save a 2 million dollar grant we received to renovate our old facilties (...a year and a fucking half ago) for a damn rainy day, while one of our studios three hours away gets to suffer another ND winter without a working furnace.  Instead, they'll continue using space heaters.

Not as cute as yours, MFJ :)

  • When I worked at the ice cream shop I heard this constantly:

"If you don't stop what you are doing right now you won't get ice cream!"
    *kid continues horrible behavior*
"Can I get a brownie sundae with hot fudge for him and let me think what I want"

After working there 2 years, only one woman had the balls to pick her kid up and let them go without because of their brattiness.

Also, I thought giving ice cream to babies was bad enough, but we had a coffee ice cream with actual espresso beans in it that parents would feed to their 9 month old, 5 year old, you name it.

  • Man, I never got fast food for being a brat. Damn my parents for actually being parents.

But I do get a kick out of watching bratty kids sometimes. I'll never forget this kid at the zoo. I was working the bird enclosure and it had rained, so there were puddles (with bird poop in them). The kid screams about something and the parents say to be quiet because he's scaring the birds from their cups of nectar. So the kid sits down in the puddle, then rolls over onto his stomach. In the dirt puddle. And the dad had to pick him up to move him. It was awesome.
  • I'm going to be the mean mom. My niece will attest to that.

i can find a time-out corner anywhere, I've left stores and put toys back on shelves because "little girls having temper tantrums don't get treats" and failure to say "thank you" will get you the look.
  • My mom loves to tell this story.  I wanted a toy at Target once when we were running errands when I was little.  My mom said we'd go look when she was done getting everything she had to get.  So really, the chances of me getting the toy that day were good.  But I didn't want to wait, so I threw a fit.  My mom took me out of the store promptly and I never got the toy.  I never threw a tantrum in public again.

At Starbucks people would sometimes get frappuccinos for their kids - if that wasn't bad enough (and they would ask if we had kid sized fraps?! No, it's not a kids' drink) they'd sometimes get the kind with coffee. And yes, there's real coffee in there. Along with a lot of other stuff.

My niece loves Starbucks.  Although , she only gets a cup of warm milk with a splash of my mocha in it.  I've seen people ordering those iced coffees for their kid though.  Weird!
  • My boyfriend was fed pizza and fast food as a kid.  He and I have had many, many conversations about what we'll feed our children someday.  They won't learn what McDonalds is from me, I promise you that much!  And being firm and following through are some of the most difficult things to do as a parent, but ultimately the most important.  I don't remember the numerous times I managed to talk my parents into caving on their threats, but I do remember one hockey game we were going to when my brother and I rolled down the hill after my parents told us not to... we never got to see that hockey game.

I was at the grocery store and saw two parents with two young kids with a cart full of frozen food and Chef Boyardee cans.  Seriously?  That's what you feed your children?  Where are the vegetables and fruits?!

  • McDonalds probably stays in business by way of little fat bratty kid rewards.

  • I have The Glare and it works on kids that misbehave.  It looks kind of like Allie Brosh in this picture (Link)  I love kids :) They are so adorable, until they "I want this" and "I want that" I mean what would Santa Claus do?

  • Anna I'm definitely the mean aunt too. Z has gotten very used to getting her way since her dad went overseas and is used to Scott caving. Over the summer were up in Maine and sil and I were doing one thing while Scott and Z were walking through the toys. I walk over and she had picked out 4 things that "Uncle was going to buy". I very calmly told Scott that we would not be buying her toys, seeing as how she just received tons of toys for her birthday not 5 hours earlier, and that if he wanted to ever see another video game again he would stop buying her things she didn't need. Z told her mom that I said we couldn't buy her more toys and sil just said "Well thank goodness we got Auntie then, I need some backup in the voice of reason department!"

At the store I work at I saw the most horrible thing.
A woman was shopping with her granddaughter and was at the register buying the girl about $90 worth of clothes. All the while the girl(between 8-10, so way to old for it) was screaming and crying because she didn't get the other dress that she wanted. The woman told the girl that she could go back and look at the dress one more time before they left(which was giving in way more than I would have already). The girl came back with the dress and cried until the grandmother gave in and bought it.

My mother(and grandmother for that matter) would have left the store the second I complained and if I started screaming and crying I would have been grounded for months after being spanked.

If I ever have children they will never act like that.

Exactly!  However, I will always cave and buy a well-behaved child a new book if they ask.
  • I completely understand what you mean. I'm a nurse and you can literally see Dairy Queen and McDonalds from our exam rooms. I have been there for 3 years so you can imagine how many parents I have heard bribe their children to be good with stopping at one of these places. Plus we have a vending machine out front with mainly junk in it that they will raid as well. I also can't stand when parents tell their children that if they are not good then they will get a shot.

Anyways done with my rant for now!
