Snarky Brides

Hi, my name is J and I'm a huge PW.

Have we already had a thread about how you make your T-Giving turkey?  I know we've had one about what all we're making, but I'm curious how everyone makes theirs.

And, also, bonus question, is Pandora being super weird for anyone else today?

This is something I've always wanted to try, but it scares me.

  • Not sure on Pandora, haven't gotten it loaded up on my phone yet, so no answer on that one.

Last few years we've deep fried our turkeys, injected with a marinade from Shore Lunch.  OMG.  It's sooo good.  This year we're just roasting it, not sure how though.  Kinda wish we could deep fry it again, but MIL is coming over and her health is pretty bad, so no deep fried goodness.

Dont be scared! It is super easy, and defintely worth it. We change the brine slightly each tim, I think last time we tried Alton Browns recipe from foodnetwork.
  • I've never cooked my own turkey. I hope to some day, because then I will feel like a real grown-up. We always go to FI's parents for TG.

Raenbow - I love your sig pick. It made me smile.

I also stopped using pandora a while ago because I'd only use it on my phone while at work and it drained my battery too much.

Boy, I'm just rocking at giving out completely irrelevant info tonight. I apologize.

Yeah, I feel like it will be one of those things that's scary until you try it, then you kick yourself for not trying it sooner.  Like roasting a chicken.

  • I made a turkey for the first time a couple years ago. I injected it and threw it in the oven. Every 30-45 minutes I would inject it a few more times. It was super moist. I was impressed.

  • I have never cooked a turkey. We always go to like 3 places on holidays so I never cook. I really want to try it.

Pandora- I listen to it every morning and for some reason the same song played first everyday this week.
  • I second Alton Brown's brine recipe. It's impossible to dry out anything you put in that. We do all of our poultry like that.

  • My turkey comes from whoever's house I'm at, so I'm no help. I don't care for it much anyway unless it's sliced up into sandwiches. It's one of those things that always looks a lot more delicious than it tastes.

    put roast in pan
rub 1 packet of onion soup mix  onto meat
pour 1-2 cups of water into the pan depending on size of roast
    put on lid
cook at 350 for 1.5hrs+half an hour for every pound
baste regularly and add more water if necessary

when done, take out, mix in bisto beef gravy powder into what is left over in the pan + some more water and serve.
  • LTZ- Thanks! She climbs right in each time, I still laugh at her when she does it!

As for Pandora, Ive been listening on and off today, and havent had a problem.
  • I rub mine in butter and rosemary and put garlic under then skin.

Me too! I make roast chicken a lot, and the raw skin is almost enough to be a dealbreaker for me. I don't eat it either once it's cooked, bleh.

  • We just throw it in. I've heard good things about brining though.

I have only known one other person to be allergic to turkey, and she found out after 50 years of loving it. How did you find out? What reactions do you have?
  • I make homemade cornbread stuffing, stuff the bird, rub it with butter, garlic salt, pepper, paprika, crushed red pepper and basil.  Cover, roast and baste.

  • DH brines it overnight in a 5-gallon bucket.  Sometimes he puts fresh herbs under the skin, sometimes not.  Then we put it on the smoker, lowest heat, for 8-10 hours.  Yummy.

  • Mmm sounds delicious.  Luckily my boss told me I can go home early, so I will take advantage of that!  Talk to you guys again on Monday, I hope everyone has a great weekend, and I can't wait to see AATB's pics!

  • I love the turkey skin, provided it's all crispy from butter.  Deep frying it freaked me out, cause I figured it would be all oily and greasy, but it was awesome and moist.
  • Easy Turkey prep: put garlic herb butter under the skin, throw some herbs in the roaster with it a bake.  Never had a bad turnout
  • Sugar's dad makes THE BEST smoked turkey that will melt like buddah(butter).

  • I never cooked the turkey, when we hosted the ex cooked it I did the rest. But one thing my Mom alwaysdid was make sure to cook it breast side down, it keeps it moist.

    Nowadays we eat out.

<div>I found out a couple years ago during a routine allergy test.I have gastronomic reactions. Same for pork, shrimp, catfish, celery, green beans and mustard. They just create lots of inflammation in my body and make me retain fluid and feel crappy. I still eat them occaisionally, except mustard because it makes me nauseous and always has. Since I stopped eating them, though, I have way fewer other allergies and inflammation problems (acne, muscle recovery, etc).</div>
