Apparently we discuss pressing world issues as well

So tell me, do you think we should boycott Arizona because of the Immigration issue?  Why or why not?

Re: Apparently we discuss pressing world issues as well

  • Don't boycott me! At least not until I move out of this state.
  • I truly just don't believe this bill is the correct answer.  It's a little scary really...
"Diversity is the key to life, without it we would be a mindless drone of a single colored spectrum."
  • And no, I do not think we should boycott Arizona. There is a huge problem here with illegal immigrants. I have no problem with people coming over to this country as long as they do so legally.
I have a huge problem with the fact that my tax dollars foot the bills for people who come over here illegally and end up in the hospital or whatever. Yet there is no one who is going to pay my hospital bill if something happened to me.

While I can agree with that., I don't think it's cause to destroy the economy in Arizona.  It is still a state, and the people that live there are still Americans.  If they lose enough of their income, the rest of the states will be forced to pull them out of it anyway, so why create the problem to begin with?

Disclaimer: I'm conservative, so I do feel that we need much tighter immigration controls than we currently have, but I dont' think the bill Arizona passed is the answer, either.  There has to be a happy medium.

If Arizona Iced Tea doesn't come from Arizona, then I'm OK with the boycott.

On the serious note. I don't think boycotts are an effective way to get law makers to change their mind. However, I am appreciative of people who do it. I will probably avoid Arizona based companies and definitely will not make plans to travel there. That's just who I am.

It's the same reason I refused to get married in NY. I don't agree with their marriage laws.

My reason on why or why not (and I don't think I would actually tell anyone they shouldn't go to Arizona) is simply personal. If you don't agree with the law, then you shouldn't support the eco-politcal system that upholds it. Once again, how you do this is a personal decision. Since I am not an Arizona resident and can't picket or write to my congress man, I will "boycott" Arizona.

EDIT: I put this in quotes because there is little I can do to "boycott" Arizona. I didn't have any travel plans to go there, and if I did, I doubt I would change them.

I don't think it's the resident's faults and I don't agree with the current immigration laws almost anywhere, but I don't think this bill is the answer, either.

I fully understand what you said up there, and I don't think it's selfish.  There's a reason we have immigration laws, and they need to be properly enforced.  Since our federal government seems to want to sweep the issue under the carpet and pretend it doesn't exist, unfortunately states have to take it under their own power, and then you end up with situations like this where the rights of individual citizens might be stepped on in order to protect those citizens.

  • I don't see why the whole state has to be penalized for their governments decisions. It's not my fault. Don't go boycotting me and making things harder on me.
  • I'm pretty conservative, so I interpret the law in the sense that if you're in the country illegally, and are caught, you're getting sent back.  Isn't proving that you're a legal citizen as easy as carrying a driver's license?  I can understand how people are uncomfortable with what they see as an 'invasion of privacy,' but if the problem with illegal immigrants is as bad as Roxy (and CNN) says it is, then I'll admit I support this.
  • What's funny is that I'm planning a trip to Phoenix for the FIRST TIME EVER within the next month or two.

I really don't see how this immigration bill can be held up as constitutional. OR how they can enforce it without racial profiling. It's just ridiculous, IMO.

Exactly.  There are many Arizonians who don't support the bill, and who have to live and work just like the rest of us.  Why penalize them because of the actions of some lawmakers?

I'm a liberal, but I agree that SOMETHING needs to be done about immigration.  This bill is NOT it.  We need to fix the process - there are SO many people here who are TRYING to become citizens but our system is SO messed up that it takes so long they just give up.

I totally hear you on this. It's the same in NYC. We have a lot of immigration problems and I'm sure Arizona has even more. I just don't agree with this particular bill.  I don't know enough specifics about AZ to give a proposed solution, though.
  • My thing too is, can't any of us be stopped on the street and asked to show ID? Yes, I realize they will be much more likely to stop a hispanic person, which no, not really fair.
I definitely agree with the stronger penalties for employers who hire illegal immigrants.
I think illegal immigrants need to do the steps to ecome a citizen or they need to leave.
  • Jenny,

I think the greater controversy is coming in the way officials plan to enforce the law.  From what I've heard they are going to use racial profiling, and only ask "Mexican-looking people" to prove their citizenship.  I can see both sides of that argument.  On one hand, racial profiling works to an extent, but on the other hand it can very easily turn into racial discrimination.

This is what I was trying to say.

However, if I were planning on going to AZ, I wouldn't cancel my trip because of this.

For me, right now, I am not even sure what parts of my spending go to Arizona, if any.

I think I'm pretty moderate. I understand that there is a problem with immigration and something does need to be done about it. I just don't think this is the answer. As I said, boycotting decisions are very personal and not really effective in coercing change from law makers.

I also think it's a little insane that people are talking about boycotting AZ for this and no one ever said anything about a social movement against CA for the Prop 8 situation. (I actually DID cancel a trip to LA after that.) Immigration is a problem that needs a solution, this may not be it, but it's still a problem.

Actually no - a police officer isn't supposed to stop you and ask for an id unless he/she has a good reason too.  I am very nervous about the racial profiling which may happen.  I'm also really nervous about the provision in the law which allows private citizens to sue city officials if they believe they aren't enforcing the laws.  The immigration laws are crap.  I have an client who is seeking aslyum and has a great case - she has to wait 1.5 years for a hearing due to the backlog of cases.  Its a sad situation all the way around.

I do not think that we should boycott Arizona because it would just make a bad economy worse.  I do plan on donating to the invididual who runs against the current governor (unless he/she is a total whack job).

I also signed petitions and contacted whomever I could in government.

Not related, but I really wonder if anyone has any idea what undocumented workers contribute to the economy vs. what they use in social welfare and whatever. A lot of them distrust government (and banks) due to situations in their home countries, so I DO wonder what they use, other than things like the fire department and emergency rooms. I suppose it would be hard to gauge.

DLs are easy to fraudulently obtain, so unless the state is prepared for everyone to carry a passport, it's kind of stupid.  This country has a huge problem with illegal immigration, but it's focused mostly on the southern border hispanic population.  There are plenty of european/asian/african illegals here - are they prepared to question everybody at every stop?  Probably not.

I agree that the immigration issue needs to be dealt with, but that bill isn't the answer.

ETA:  I'd like to know what type of training these cops are going to go through to learn what real DLs from all 50 states + border crossing cards + greencards look like.  I can tell you, with all the versions that are out there, it's hard.

Yes, sorry, I meant to add that very important part. It is the same way now, they can stop them if they have a good reason too. Of course there will be cases where they have no good reason to do so.
  • I think the main argument about what undocumented workers contribute or don't contribute is that they send money back to their family members in Mexico or South America - instead of going shopping.  I think that's a pretty lame argument for the amount of political outrage.

Not really. It isn't a crime to walk around without identification (though it might not be a good idea). In France, however, you ARE required to have certain ID on you at all times and you can get routinely stopped and asked to see it.

Actually, this is one of the big issues with having to show ID to vote. It's seen as sort of a poll tax because licenses and passports aren't free. So if you don't drive, you shouldn't be required to have one. And therefore you should be able to exercise your right to vote without one. (Though my grandmother used to have a non-driver's ID. But still, it cost her about $25.)

Exactly. I mean, who do you think they'd suspect of being illegal in AZ? Or CA, for that matter? Probably the dark-looking Latino guy who doesn't speak much English. True story: I had a friend who overstayed his student visa. (He was from Ireland.) He was technically in the country illegally. He then got married so he could get citizenship. Did he ever get harassed about possibly not being here legitimately? Hell no.

  • Andy,

When undocumented workers send money to their families, it does hurt our economy, and depending on the amount of money that is removed form our economy in this way, it could actually have a huge impact.

I just think the whole need to have proof that you are  US citizen and can be stopped at any time just reminds me of  the old stereotype of the Germans "show me your papers". This may be an extreme comparison to draw, but I can't help it.
