Negotiating on dresses

Is it wrong to try and negotiate the price of your dress? The store I found it at is selling it at retail price and  I've found it for almost $200 cheaper at another store. The problem is that the cheaper store does not have it in the store, they would have to order it for me. It's part of a 2010 fall collection and most of the stores I have called do not carry it. What do I do?

Well, typically stores don't really "negotiate" that I know of.  I would tell the store that you found it at - that you've found it cheaper (and bring proof).  Maybe they'll match it, maybe they won't.  Every store is different.

When I was shopping for my dress, the best discount I could get was a 10% trunk show discount. I called at least 10 stores, even that cheap one in Louisiana, and no one could go lower than that. They made it sound like it was set by the manufacturer and couldn't be negotiated. It was a Soterro & Midgley dress, so I'm sure lots of other brand name dresses are like that. I am amazed when I watch SYTTD and they get big discounts, but of course their dresses are usually much more expensive than mine.
I agree though, it doesn't hurt to ask!

Most places that I've been to do not negotiate.  I decided to go to Dress My Way in Dallas where I can have the dress I want sketched, designed, and made.  The price qoute for my dress was qouted within my range.  I hope this helps.

    Cheers!

FWIW, most bridal stores have to order dresses. Mine was ordered for me. Unless you're on a major time crunch, it might be worth it to get the cheaper price.
