OOT brides - portraits

Disclaimer that this message is not as remotely entertaining as a boner at the altar, but this is the one board that probably has the most diverse planning experience... so, all in the name of practicality:  For out-of-town brides planning (or who have already planned) a wedding OOT and did bridal portraits - - I live in D.C. and we're getting married in Austin on 11/6. I had always planned to fly down a few weeks beforehand in Oct. to do my bridal portraits with our wedding photog, and use that time to get my hair/makeup trials with my selected vendors. But it's turning into a huge hassle -- first, I am worried about hauling the dress down there, then back to D.C. to finish alterations, then back down there for the wedding. It seems like there's no room to hang anything on flights these days so I'd probably have to shove the dress in the overhead compartment, and then I'll have to get it pressed multiple times, which means more $$. I obviously don't want to get portraits done too far in advance since I want my dress alterations to be mostly completed so it fits in the photos. Oh, and my photog can't do any Sat in Oct. Argh. I figured I would fly down 10/21 and do it that Fri, two weeks before the wedding, then just leave my dress at my mom's house until the wedding. Turns out my makeup vendor can't do either Fri, Sat OR Sun that weekend (she can only do the previous wknd, Oct. 15.)  I am a little worried three weeks out and not bringing my dress back to D.C. for one final fitting may be dicey.  Not that I think I'll drop add'l weight (I wish), but still...
So, sorry for the text wall that makes absolutely no sense, but if anyone has suggestions on how you timed this stuff, I welcome them.  Also, I fully realize that bridal portraits are a twisted Southern obsession and a good half of the country would tell me it's a waste of time and to shut the F up.

Re: OOT brides - portraits

  • Ok your last sentence makes the most sense.

Please tell me no mini brides are involved in these said 'portraits' correct?

Seriously though? I am honestly wondering why you can just not take the time on the day of the wedding to get a good number of shots of just yourself in various poses. This would save a lot of hassle, no?

  • Why not use a different photog and get them done in DC?
  • I think you'll be fine with getting the final fitting 3 weeks out from the wedding.  If you're concerned, check the TX boards to find a local seamstress, and take it there for the final fitting, if you feel like you need one.  I wouldn't fly back and forth with the dress.

  • Assuming you're dealing while a photography package that includes the portraits, and assuming moving the dress back and forth is that much of a PITA, then try this. See if your photographer, makeup, and hair artists can all do a Monday or Tuesday about 2 weeks before the wedding. Most vendors are not booked on those days. Get your final fitting just before you go, and then leave the dress at your moms house.

  • I know, good questions - the wedding day has a bunch of stuff going on; brunches, swimming (weird tradition with my friends), and the ceremony is an early start time, so there won't be any time that day. Plus, in the South you do this thing where you put a massive print of the bridal portrait up at the reception. It's like AW times 100. So you get them done ahead of time, to print the photo, frame it, etc. I could probably use a D.C. photog, but I love my photog down there and there are a couple cool spots I wanted to do them in - our porch, out at a ranch, in my favorite music club.
Tide, you're probably right and I am just being too obsessive about final details long-distance. Good call also, Petra, as I had only thought of a Fri, but I guess I could do a Mon since either way I will have to beg for a day off from the work prison guards.

  • And...  it'll probably be cheaper to fly on MON  :)

<div>I'd elope if someone told me I had to put up a giant portrait of myself. I don't now how it happened, but I don't look anything like how I see myself in my head. I really hate my looks in the mirror and don't think I could handle staring at myself all night, or knowing that others were doing the same. </div>

  • Yes, it's very hard to explain the logic -- you have a big picture up of the same person who is standing right across from you drinking, dancing, eating, etc.?  Why do you need a static picture if the actual person you are looking at all night long? At one reception we got pretty drunk and started playing "pin the tail" on the bridal portrait blindfolded with a groomsman's tie... the MOTB was totally pissed and threw her arms around the framed portrait and dragged it into a closet for "safekeeping".

  • Thanks, Meaghan. One of my best friends is from Newburyport, Mass, so I know it's not easy to humor you Yankee girls. When she took me to the Cape one time I was told to identify myself as a "townie" so as not to get my tourist a** made fun of.  In hindsight, I think she was trying to get me beat up.
