Snarky Brides

Okay do you guys remember

How my group in the nutirtion program was going to a low income school to assess the school lunches being served and the nutirtion knowlegde of the 5th graders? Well, the kids were really sweet AND  they knew their nutrition AND the school lunches were frikkin awesome. I am happy that a low income school treats their children so well and makes sure that the kids are eating right but now we don't really know what to fix lol.

So my intervention is going to be THAT 5th grade class teaching the 2nd graders about nutrition. (maybe the 2nd graders need a little more knowledge)

So my question is, can 2nd graders help cook with the 5th graders (easy stuff) if an adult (me,  & the teacher) is present?

Sure! As long as you do all the oven stuff, and there is a lot of handwashing to prevent kids' fingers from going from their nose to the food, you can totally do that.

  • I think so. They can crack eggs and mix stuff. I'd make sure everything is eye-level though, so you don't have to worry about them falling off a stool, pulling a hot pot onto themselves.

My sister baked her first pie, alone, in 2nd grade. It can be done.

  • I definitely think so! I used to help cook when I was that young.
  • BTW- That is a freaking awesome idea and I wish I could watch.

  • Yes!  Great idea.

  • TY Sarah! Thanks guys! I think I may try to find nutritious recipes today that kids like that include, lean meat, veggies, & whole grains. Serve with fruit and LF milk and BAM nutrition is being taught!

  • Yup!  As long as it's easy stuff, and there are no knives or hot stuff.

  • I'd say that would be ok.  2nd graders are, what, 7?  I'd say that's plenty old enough.

  • Can you come to my school?  That is all.

But, yes, I think second graders can cook (under the conditions everyone else said) and that will be an awesome, conrete way for them to absorb the material.  Kids that age need conrete tasks that make abstract thoughts clear and I think this will not only catch their attention, but also help them understand what's good for them.
  • Everything will be pre-cut

I agree with this, but I'll add the common sense stuff too.  Don't let the 2nd graders use sharp knives.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. Because trust me when I tell you honey, they're gonna need it. ~jcaruncho2010

You would have laughed at me last weekend.  I finished making dinner, held up my hands and said "Look!  I didn't cut myself this time!"

  • I used to make my own little smokies in the microwave at that age. Any way you can teach them how to cook something healthy in the microwave? That is something they'll likely do at home.

  • Remind me that we ever have a G2G we can't cook together.

  • You can make pasta in teh microwave (buckwheat or quinoa, something substantial) so you don't have to deal with boiling water.

  • True, but I think our best option would be an easy bake oven.

  • I'm guessing little smokies aren't on your nutrition plan. And that also eliminates crock pot weiners.

<div>That could work too. how about little pita pizzas, or something quick that kids really could make on their own. WW pita, some veggies and a little low fat cheese sounds good to me!</div>
