Skin of a 15 year old

I went off BC to reduce chemical risks of blood clotting and such.  My skin is now behaving like a teenager's.  It's all hormonal and mad.  I'm also breaking out on my neck and by my ears, which never happened even when I was in high school.  How do you manage this kind of breaking out?  I wash my hair daily and don't use conditioner because it's short.

  • Wash your hair first. Then, rinse and soap up with your normal body cleanser. Sometimes the oily residue from shampoos can build up if not washed off properly and irritate your skin more than your soap/body wash will.
  • This just boggles my mind because I've never broken out there and my hair was down past my belt line in high school.

Mine started clearing up when I got rid of all the fragrances in my bathroom. Fragrances can really irritate your skin. I only wash with Cetaphil (but the generic cheaper one, with no fragrance), and use a fragrance free moisturizer.

FI still believes in scrubs and harsh cleansers, but everytime he runs out of his and uses mine, his skin clears up. DOH!

ETA: I also use fragrance free body wash and shampoo that I found at Whole Foods. It is their store brand, but it works very well. Plus, its cheap. A humongous bottle is $5.

  • I had this EXACT same thing happen when I went off of BC.  I tried a lot of things, but this is what worked for me.  I bought all of these products from the Better Health Store, but some grocery chains carry it.

Wash face with sulfur soap -- leave it on to dry, then rinse it off.
Wipe face with a witch hazel toner.
Spot apply pure tea tree oil to forming pimples or other angry areas (it's a natural bacteria fighter, and good at drying things out).

    It's worked like a charm!
  • I'm allergic to lots of things.  No scented things to be found.

  • Ok. I've been bad skin since I was 13 and have tried virtually everything and this is what works for me:

    -Washing your face with Cetaphil
-Dabbing isophoryll alcohol on oily areas and breakouts with a cotton ball
-Clearasil Ultra on breakout prone areas
    -Murad spot treatment on pimples

  • I never had bad skin but I do occasionally get a HUGE zit or two - and when I was on the pill, I never got any.

I'm going back on the pill in a couple months and I can't wait :)

  • oh lord I hope this doesn't happen to me....Im going off BC soon....but when I was 16 I took acutane & actually haven't had a breakout since.

but I have to agree with others on the Cetaphil face wash & lotion.
  • I get regular facials, I also just got a Clairsonic Skin brush and I LOVE it.
  • I don't know, but I'm taking notes. My face exploded over the summer.
Washing with Fresh Farmacy from Lush has helped, but new ones still keep popping up. It's aggrevating.
  • when i switched BC my face exploded. I use Neutrogena makeup remover, acne face scrub and then a wipe my face with the toner with a cotton ball and then oil free moisturizer...All Neutrogena. I found if i used different products together they don't work as well.

I also tried the Neutrogena Acne Clearing Kit...but it is expensive so i switched to the individual bottles and it works great!

  • its obviously hormonal so take - flax seed oil which reduces your prostaglandin 3 hormone, which increases inflammation. also take vit a and zinc. stick with your normal cleanse/moisturise routine.
ps. cant believe you don't condition!
  • Ok. Thanks for the warning.  I guess I will be waiting until after the wedding to go off BC.  I've had some weird headaches and bruise/blood bumps on my shins (Dr said they're fine.)  She recommended going of BC, but I was worried about acne.

I've been on BC since I was 15 (for bad cramps), so I'm really hesitant.

Anyway, back to the original question.  I really love the Clean and Clear spot formula when I do notice a zit coming through.  Seems to help keep them from actually popping through (gross.)

Also- drink lots and lots of water.  That made the biggest difference for me!
  • i just went to a dermatologist last week (trying to clear up before my wedding), and he told me i should be washing my face with Dove bar for sensitive skin.  he said its very gentle and is what he tells all his clients to use.  i've only been using it for a few days, but i skin feels better - and alot less oily (which is a major issue for me).  he also said to use an oil-free moisturizer as needed (which might be everyday for those without super oily skin, like me).
