Who uses protein powder or meal replacement type things?

I need to get some so that I can have something filling, healthy, and not super high caloried to drink towards the end of work so I don't come home starving and eat a full meal right before bed.  It needs to taste good and not be gritty, and I'd prefer if it didn't have aspartame.

  • I do protein shakes but ONLY after I work out. It can bulk you up if you do it too much so I do it on days where my body needs the extra boost.

warning- protein powder may give you some unpleasant side effects... stomach wise...

  • I use Jay Robb's protein powder.  I get it at Whole Foods; not sure if you have one by you.  Make sure it's the whey protein.  I mix mine with vanilla yogurt.
  • I used to drink this powder kind, but it is gross, gritty, super expensive, and tasted like ass so I doubt you'd want to know anything about it.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. Because trust me when I tell you honey, they're gonna need it. ~jcaruncho2010

  • I use Hi-Health's brand of protein powder called x-rated. Its only 19grams of protein but mixed with milk and a banana and its wonderful. Higher protein = major gas...just an fyi!

Well, I'd not use much at all, probably about half of what's recommended.  But at work, we eat dinner at 4:45 and I work until 11.  Plus the food really sucks so I don't eat much dinner.  So I'm starving by 9 pm.  I just need a little something extra, and this seems to be the easiest route because I hate bars.

  • The Special K ones taste the best to me but they are kind of expensive.
    image

  • I do - or did. I've gotten slack about it.

I use Matrix 5.0.  You can order it from http://www.drugstore.com.

It mixes in really, really well. I'm 99.9% sure there's no aspartame, because it would've caused me issues if it did. I personally prefer the chocolate to the vanilla.

  • I drink a glass of the Kroger brand Slimfast in milk every morning. I think it tastes good. It's like 200 calories with skim milk.
    image
  • I drink slim fast in the morning - but I think it has a lot of carbs and stuff.  I mostly do it just because it's fast and I'm always rushing in the morning.

I drink Jillian Michael's whey protein after I work out.  It's good.

  • I use Super High Protein Powder, but only in smoothies, which require a blender. It has no taste of its own, and no aspartame.

I tried Jay Robb, but I didn't like it. Almost everything else had aspartame or sugar.

  • I use Biotest for the most part. Sometimes Muscle Milk.

The Biotest one is simply protein. The Muscle Milk one is more of a higher protein meal replacement.

If you're wanting something for later in the day, or just before bed, casein or casein blends would be the best. Casein digests more slowly, which gives you a fuller feeling longer and is best for later in the day to curb nighttime hunger. For things like a post workout shake, whey isolates are the best.

The Biotest protein I use is a 50/50 blend of casein and whey. Not sure what the Muscle Milk is, but I think it's also a 50/50 blend.

However, I also go through a site on occasion that lets you build your own protein powder. http://www.trueprotein.com/

On there you choose how much you want by weight, what % of each type of protein you want, added vitamins and supplements, flavors, and what type of sweetener. Which could work well for you since you want to stay away from the aspartame.

[QUOTE]MLO Super Protein is 4 different types of protein, which is another reason I liked it. I have mixed it with oatmeal before, and it makes it gummy, but it tastes ok.  My fave ready to drink- for taste- is AdvantEdge Carb Control, Rich Dark Chocolate. I can even drink it non-chilled. It has aspartame. However, the aspartame doesn't have as much aftertaste as Muscle Milk Light. I liked the MMLVanilla Creme 100 cal ones, but the aftertaste was just too much fakeness for me.

How is the MLO mixed with milk?

<div>I don't know, but I can try it tonight for you. It doesn't have any natural flavoring, so you might want to add a bit of cocoa or choc. syrup. I'll write myself a note to try it. </div>

  • Thanks! If it has no taste and just tastes like the milk then, that's fine with me.  I just know that some of the crap that FI uses tastes like ass.  I can't handle that.

  • I do a natural meal replacement. Its called Raw Meal. It is great! It doesn't make you bulk up, its just packed full with nutritional requirements. LOVE it.

  • Oh, FFIL swears by these:
Alove Whole Food Energizer shakes. I tried it with water once and I didn't like it, but it might be ok with milk. I find them in packets and in containers in the Natural Food Section, so you can just try a packet without having to buy the whole container. I have used that brand of liquid vitamin in the past, and it was awesome mixed into smoothies.

  • I'm no help. I use protein powder in my coffee in the morning with a little non-fat creamer. You just have to mix it really well. I use the vanilla kind. I've always gotten different kinds from Whole Foods - sometimes whey, sometimes hemp. Not everyone likes it in hot drinks, I guess. I just got a blender so I'm going to try making breakfast smoothies.

  • Oh, I like the idea of packets so I can try it before buying a big old container.

Thanks for all your suggestions ladies!  I'm going to head to GNC later today I think, to check it out.

  • Lifetime Fitness makes their own which I've been using, except not recently because I've been slack about going to the gym...I would mix up a smoothie before work, usually spinach/banana/almonds with milk and plain yogurt.  Throw in a scoop or two of whey powder, depending on if I lifted that day.  Drink some after the gym, put the rest in a thermos.  It stayed cold and smoothie-ish until 8 or 9 that night when I would drink the rest for a evening boost to get me to the end of work without noshing out on carbs.  Worked really well, I need to get back into it.

  • I've been debating about buying a big canister of the Muscle Milk or MML powder, since my gym keeps having sales on them and my dietician told me to eat more protein and I keep feeling like I'm not getting enough.  I don't really want to force myself to eat meat or eggs at every meal. :P

I've bought MM before and it was pretty good.  Now that I'm doing weight training 5 days a week (alternating days between muscle groupings) I'm thinking it might be helpful.

  • I used to drink GNC's brand all the time when I was doing P90X. I think it's called Wheybolic Extreme, it comes in a black and red canister. The chocolate and vanilla were both delicious with milk and about 90 calories a scoop. I mixed one scoop with 8 oz milk, if you get a small Rubbermaid shaker from Target with a lid you can get all the lumps out. Also really good with a frozen banana and 1T peanut butter as a smoothie.
