Food Allergies

Hello all- My FSIL who I actually get along with very well has recently been diagnosed with food allergies.  Specifically to corn and get this- chicken. She had the test done at the doctors and reacted very strongly to both.  Has anyone ever heard of a chicken allergy? I've heard of the corn..which is bad enough, but for a girl who doesn't like pork or fish..she is now very limited in what she'll eat.  I feel terrible for her- it sucks to have to cut food out of your diet that you like.  Just wondering if anyone had experience with this or any advice I can give her. Thanks.

Re: Food Allergies

  • I developed strange allergies at age 20.  They did test me for chicken....and thankfully I can still eat it.  I'm highly allergic to blue cheese, gorgonzola cheese and scallops.  I was able to eat all three things all through my childhood.....so yes odd allergies do come up at odd times.

[QUOTE]I've never heard of a chicken allergy - but I have heard of some people being allergic to eggs?  So maybe that's related?  I dunno.  I have no allergies that I know of so I basically suck at this.  Would it be just chicken she's allergic to or all poultry?  Because I could live without eating chicken if I could still eat turkey or goose.  And there's always good ol' beef, too :)

Not sure if this is true for a real "allergy" but FMIL was able to eat turkey with no problem.  She and her H ate turkey and pork a lot... she just couldn't eat chicken.

  • As far as I know its just chicken..which doesn't make much sense...I've read it can be the stuff they inject into chickens..antibiotics, etc..but I'm not sure. She asked for chicken and corn free recipes because I cook a lot..and she hates it.  She's also fine with eggs..again- odd.  Her's does affect everything from her skin to her breathing..so its bad enough to cut it from her diet.

  • I would die if I was allergic to chicken. Mostly because I'd probably eat it anyway.

If she's able to eat turkey, she should be able to make most of the same recipes with turkey instead of chicken.  Have you asked her if she's tried the antibiotic free, certified organic, free range, etc chicken and had the same issues with it?

  • Well if it's that bad, she's definitely better off eliminating it from her diet.  Poor thing :(

I have a friend who's allergic to dairy.  She has these pills she can take to help but she is still miserable when she caves and eats cheese or ice cream.

  • It may she's allergic or sensitive to the antibiotics and hormones the chickens are injected with.  I have a friend who can't eat chicken for this reason.

  • Weird! I have never heard of a chicken allergy and I am going to be a registered dietitian.

  • Wait, chickens eat corn, maybe that is why? But so do all other food animals.

  • Wow. I love drinking water. I'd hate that.

  • allergic to water? how do they function?

She's going to look for corn free- organic chicken and try it. Maybe..they are starting her on shots next week.  She isn't handling the news very well, and I understand.  She told the family last night at dinner at my FIL's house..a dinner of chicken and corn..so she couldn't eat. We felt terrible- but she's known for a week about her results and didn't tell anyone.  FI had just told his parents about our wedding plans changing..then she blurted out her news..ours was quickly forgotten. Her heath is much more important and I really hope she gets feeling better quick.

  • She could drink water, it just couldn't touch her skin. But there was treatment for it. I just can't imagine what the diagnosis period was like, thinking you'd never be able to bathe again.

  • I am not a big chicken or coren eater so I'd be okay.

Yeah never being able to enjoy water activities would suck.

  • My daughter's friend is allergic to water (I can't remember the name of the condition).  Bathing is very uncomfortable for her.  Her parents bought a house with a pool, and she couldn't enjoy the swim parties with her friends.

  • I'm not sure what advice to give her, persay - other than to hang in there. She will eventually find things she can eat that she enjoys, to replace it. I think a big help is to not regret (or "miss") what she can't have.

I'm deathly allergic to all nuts (peanuts, pecans, cashews, almonds, etc.) and all forms of those nuts (oil, meal, flour, paste, etc.)... as well as seafood and shellfish. I'm sensitive to celery, for some reason. When I was younger I was also allergic to milk, eggs and tomatos but luckily grew out of those. The seafood is more recent (mid-teen's)... I can remember being able to eat shrimp. And it was yummy. But oh well.

I'm also allergic to a whole host of other (non food) things including my own sweat (ha) so I feel her pain!
  • I know someone who's allergic to all meats.

Corn would be the one I worry about more. Corn is in EVERYTHING. Corn syrup, corn oil, all kinds of things you wouldn't think of. Something like 25% of all packaged products contain corn. And she'll have to watch out for chicken stock in things like soup, or mashed potatoes made with chicken broth.

  • Thanks ladies! I sent my FSIL a few links to food allergy blogs and a community I found. I hope she continues to get some support and relief.

  • I think I'd be ok with not eating chicken forever.
I recently had to give up gluten and that's been a biitch, but I'm adjusting. The worst part of gluten is that it's used in almost every damn food out there, not just the obvious breads/cakes/cookies. It's also in Soy sauce, most soups, caramel items, chips, cereals, etc.

One of my friends takes the cake (hehe) on allergies. Among other things I'm forgetting she is allergic to : gluten, egg whites, apples, pears, peaches, citrus fruits, peanuts, walnuts, cashews, almonds, dairy, grass, pollen, and cats.
