Do you have anybody in your life that when they talk politics it makes you stabby?

FBIL is like this.  Its not that he does not share the same party affiliation with me, its the fact that he has absolutely no idea wtf he is talking about.  He gets all of his political information from Bill Maher, and he insists on starting political arguments with me.

For instance, during his very long stay with us, he thought it would be a good idea to start with me when I walked in the door from work at 4am with Bill Maher cued up on DVR and a "Republicans are all selfish azzholes and the reason this country is going down the toilet."

That was a fun night.

My dad is blue, mom is red.  Ben's folks are both red.  My mom hates our red governor, who is actually a close personal friend of Ben's folks... and she rants about him, in front of them... and yeah.  Ugh.

I'm a reporter though and I know all our statewide candidates personally, so I choose who I'm going to vote for by how they treat the media, lol.  Well that and policy stuff too but, yeah.  Personal connection goes a long way with me.

My worst was my ex's family. They are pro-America to the extreme, to the point that no immigrants should be allowed in the country (legal or not) and after 9-11 they believe all people of Arab/Muslim/"brown skinned" decent should be deported back to their country (including the ones who were, you know, born in America, they get deported to random countries). Ex's brother was a freshman at UVA at the time and his mom called the Uni to raise holy hell because he was roomed with a Pakistani kid. Nevermind the Pakistani kid was born in the US, or that his dad served the US army. Nope, he was obviously a terrorist.

FI is very red and I'm purple. Some of our debates get interesting, but we can both respect each others opinions.  My FMIL is ridiculous when she talks about politics though, she has no idea about the issues but is very quick to bash any democrat. I cannot be around her when she gets started.

Exactly!  I have political discussions all the time with friends who have views all over the spectrum.  We all keep it really respectful and find it insightful.

But FBIL loves to spout off about things like housing market, taxes, etc.  All the while living with his parents, and working a job that gets him paid cash so he barely pays taxes.  If he actually was affected by things like a mortgage, high taxes, high health insurance premium, filling his oil tank, etc, I would take him a bit more seriously.

But since he lives on easy street with Mommy and Daddy, and his only bills are his cell phone and car, I cant look at him without rolling my eyes when he talks about the hardships of his "middle class"

Yep, same one. He honestly thought he was better than everyone in the world, and when I look back on it it's really disturbing. He started an online blog just to see if he could get a following and actually got it to the point where one girl called him crying because he removed her from his following list and threatened to kill herself.

Nevermind that he refused to get a job, played WoW all day, owed me over $2k in bills and all the awesome self esteem crap I ended up with.

I'm late as usual...GAH!

I generally don't have any people that bug me too much. I always get really uptight about it initially especially when I see so much of it online. I'm much better (and most everyone else is) having a discussion about politics in person where I can actually see and hear the person I'm talking to.

I'd be lying if I said I didn't side with traditional Democratic ideals but I'd like to think I am on the fence a good bit of the time. I think that moderation is the key to everything, really. I try not to always see everything from whether it's liberal or conservative, but focus on what would be the best for the greater good at the time. So much of the political debate these days is so petty. It's just each side bashing the other in order to make themselves look better by default and it sucks.

I've come across so many people who say they don't want to discuss politics and religion as if they are just these very taboo discussion topics but I tend to find that the people who are so against discussing them are those who can't handle hearing people express something they disagree with. These are hot topics that people are passionate about of course, but I think reasonable discussion about them is a wonderful thing. Where would we be without it? I can't even count the instances where I've learned something or become more curious to learn about something mentioned from a person with an opposing point of view.

I just can't handle the obnoxiousness. Although that's a product of the person in general and not just politically related.
