What's best for shoulder pain?

Other than the physical therapy and muscle relaxants I should be using...

My left (bad) shoulder is twice the size of the right (unfortunately this is common for me) and it frickin hurts tonight. What's best for a swollen, effed up muscle? Heat, ice, tiger balm??

Re: What's best for shoulder pain?

  • I think Tiger balm. My ex had terrible joint/muscle issues and said thst always did the trick.
  • That's easy and I can do it befoe I go to bed.
Seen any cute, cheap dresses lately? Like $20 cheap...
  • Just thought of this, tho--our school nurse said to take Tylenol because it's an anti-inflamatory and I think she gave me an ice pack when I had back issues.  She said the ice constricts the muscles, which makes them uninflamed, I think? Not sure at all about that.

I usually use bengay or tiger balm with alternating heat/ise. 20mins on 20 off. Take a ibuprofen and if you have some, take some arnica (sp?). Arnica works for me, it helps and its all natural I think. My chiropractor recommends it.

    Why is your shoulder bad?

Edit: using ice or heat depends on what kind of pain it is, at least for me. If its muscle pain like a spasm I use heat, if its a achy pain I use ice. If its joint pain I usually use heat.

  • I wish :(

I want something new for our e-pics, but I'm banning myself from shopping since Black Friday is right around the corner and only a few paychecks away.
  • Yea, I need to take some tylenol. My jaw is clenching too.Sigh...stress.

Um, my shoulder is bad because I have scoliosis so the left shoulder tries to over compenstate which just screws it up. On top of that I got rear ended in Aug. 2007 and it really, reallllly messed it up and I should have continued therapy but we moved out of state and were on the road for several weeks so I never continued with it.
It acts up randomly or when I am stressed. I don't really know why I'm stressed right now though.

    /whine.
  • Poor Roxy :(.  That sucks.  Does it act up often?

Is the board always this slow late at night.  Where are all the West Coast Knotties?
  • It seems extra slow tonight.

Mmm,sometimes it acts up weekly or more, other times not for a month...depends.
  •  My mom has RSD in her shoulder and is in constant pain, she has to take heavy pain killers everyday to make it through. It sucks because she had to stop working due to her limited movement now. She has had it for years and years so she is used to it but I can imagine the pain you must feel.

Tomorrow try and get some Arnica and see if it helps. They are little white pills that dissolve under your tongue and they taste kind of good too.

  • I wish I were asleep.  I'm pulling an all-nighter to get some essays graded.
  • I need to go to sleep. Really, really need to...
All nighter does not sound fun, I am sorry.
  • Blegh, I shouldn't have KNotted earlier :P.

I hope you find something to help you rshoulder pain.  Being up and in pain is not fun.
  • I should also add that Arnica comes in a topical gel form.

I need to go to bed too. I have to be up at 6 for work tomorrow, I have a feeling I will be working longer then 12hrs tomorrow. Blah.

  • Ugh, Jel, 12 hours?  Night!
  • LOL. That's what Im thinking, I hate getting home late because it takes me longer to fall asleep. The back of my eyelids are calling my name so goodnight.

Hope you pain goes away Roxy!

  • Thanks girls! I appreciate it :)
    Goodnight
  • Acupuncture. My right shoulder and side of the neck are all kinds of messed up from being attached by a dog. It is the only thing that has ever worked for me.
  • Rox, it may be too late for this, but Tylenol is NOT an anti-inflammatory. You need Advil or Aleve for that - an NSAID. Check your muscle relaxants/pain relievers and see what they contain (probably acetaminophen). IF that's the case, check with the pharmacist or your doctor and see if it's okay to take them with Advil or Aleve.

Feel better soon.  Ice may make the swelling down, but heat may loosen it up. I hate ice and avoid it unless I absolutely have to.....

Do not mess in the affairs of dinosaurs because you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.
I love you Missy. Even though you are not smart enough to take online quizzes to find out really important information. ~cew
