Apples

I have an apple the size of a grapefruit.  I have no idea how to bite into it without dislocating my jaw.  I think fall fruit has gotten freakish.  Are apples weirdly huge in your neck of the woods?

Re: Apples

  • Yes, the apples in my area are larger than normal.  We had a great season for apples here so they are big and juicy this year.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. Because trust me when I tell you honey, they're gonna need it. ~jcaruncho2010

[QUOTE]No freakishly large apples here. In fact,  I would probably say that most of the apples around here were smaller than normal this year. I too vote for cutting that monster up- and then preferably dipping it into some partially melted peanut butter!

Apparently you need some of the freak apples from Iowa.

  • Ours seem like they've been big this year.  We have an apple tree in our back yard and the apples are big, and we have twice as many as we usually do.  Next weekend I'll be making about 40 jars of applesauce.

Another apple question, what are your favorite kinds?  I've always been a big fan of Gala apples, but the last couple of years I've started buying pink lady too, and I love those.

  • I blame this and the chicken for having a 12 year old sister that bloomed freakishly early.  (Actually, I don't know, but I like to blame the food.)

    Cut it up and enjoy!

The important question is what KIND of apple?  Granny Smith are the best.

  • I recently discovered honey crisp apples.  They are so good.

I LOVE honeycrisp! And yes, that particular variety tends to be HUGE. It has a lot to do with cross breeding varieties to get different flavors/textures. You can see this in just about any fruit if you know what to look for and where to buy. I worked at a peach/apple/plum/pear/cherry orchard and it has turned me into a total fruit snob.

ETA: I totally had a huge honeycrisp for a midnight snack last night.

  • I had a honeycrisp today that was gignormous.  And delicious.  I can usually bite into them ok, but this one was destined to be with some almond butter, so it got cut up.

  • The apples around here seem normal - I just ate one that was the size of a baseball.  I saw some large ones when I went apple picking, but the ones in the supermarkets are normal sized.
