Snarky Brides

Stupid fight & he's fvcking up my plans. Grr.

We're buying a house and I might kill Tim. Yay!

I have a plan for the kitchen and he's just fvcking it all up.

This is the kitchen

It's nice, right? I freaking love it, but it doesn't have a lot of counter space. I was planning to put a kitchen island centered on the wall below the cut-out.

This is the island

I figured the black with stainless top would match the appliances, plus I just really love that island.

Anyway, Tim is insisting that the chest freezer (5 cubic ft) MUST go in the kitchen and he wants to put it next to the island.  That will look so fvcking stupid, don't you think?

The house has a non-attched garage and I want to put the freezer out there, but he is completely unwilling to compromise on the matter because he says in the summer it will run constantly to maintain temperature. But guess what? I don't give a shiit.

A chest freezer crammed on the wall next to the island will look stupid right? Or am I just being an unreasonable asshole?

  • I've only seen freezers like that in garages.  Your kitchen will look beautiful with that island.  Can we slightly maim Tim, just to get the point across? ;)
  • Also, this is going to be a P&R because I have to go to bed.

  • Those freezers belong in the garage. Not in a nice kitchen next to an island.

Does this house have a basement? I've seen chest freezers in basements too. Then it will stay somewhat cool during the summer.
  • Yea, nobody puts those in your actual kitchen.

I am on your side. We have a huge freezer in the basement which I am trying to get FI to agree to get rid of since we rarely use it.

  • I have a huge kitchen, so my freezer chest is in the kitchen, but it is tucked away in a corner. I put a table cloth over it and a bowl with fruit on it. People don't even realize it is a freezer.

  • No, no, no - I've been alive for a long time and I've only ever seen chest or upright freezers in basements or garages.
  • Basement or Garage-that's it! You win.

    Yes!
Or you could put it next to the island to please him, until everyone comes over and says, "Why the hell is there a freezer by the island?"
Then he will feel like a dumbass and move it.

  • Yep, the basement is a good idea as well, and possibly "closer" since it's in the house, rather than the detached garage.

Denise's plan is good--convince your family and friends to be all "ZOMG WFT?!?" and maybe he'll crack :P.

    Yes, this.

  • Give him good reasoning why a chest freezer isn't your favorite plan.... and bargain with him. I know what he means about the freezer running all the time in the summer, but is there another reason he prefers it in the kitchen? Like, is he a chef? Maybe you could quadruple insulate the freezer in the garage, or put it in the basement.

Is there an area of the house he can totally plan/do something he wants? Trade off?
  • Freezers don't belong in the kitchen.

  • Basement, definitely the basement.

  • Maybe you could tell him that if he wants to plan the flow of the kitchen, it can be his job to cook from now on? I kind of think that the house's primary cook should have veto power over anything that goes in the kitchen, since s/he will be the primary user of the space. As far as I'm concerned, anything that saps my will to cook by its presence in the kitchen needs to find a home somewhere else.

  • Our freezer used to be in the kitchen, but our basement never has plug ins to plug it in. It's in the basement at our new place because there was no space in the kitchen. I wouldn't have it upstairs in a NICE kitchen though.

  • This is going to be an ongoing battle. I just know it. Like the leg lamp in A Christmas Story.

I probably should have mentioned that the house does not have a basement.

I'd say I do about 75% of the cooking. Tim does all of the holiday meals and he cooks for dinner parties, but I do the bulk of the day to day stuff

Bakekiwi - You suggested a trade-off. I thought we already had that agreement. The house has an in-law suite (complete with it's own smaller kitchen!) and that's going to be his "man space" and I have no say in the decorating of that room. The deal was that I'm supposed to get to do whatever I want with the rest of the house.

I actually woke up in the middle of the night with a brilliant idea to slip one of the movers an extra $50 to put the freezer directly into the garage (and hope Tim just doesn't notice), but for some reason I don't think that will work in my favor.

I was also willing to compromise in that he could build an enclosure for the freezer (something that looks like an island) with a butcher block top on hinges that flips up so you have access to the freezer. That way I'd get my counter space and he'd have his beloved freezer nearby, but he thinks that's a dumb idea.

Perhaps the freezer will suffer some sort of malfunction before we move.

  • Holy shiit! I just might be the smartest person alive (but probably not).

What are your thoughts on this as a compromise?

I think a black freezer won't stand out in an ugly way nearly as much as that white attrocity that we already have. Plus, this one is 7.2 cubic feet compared to ours which is 5 cubic feet. It's bigger, so Tim should like it.

Do you think this would be a good compromise? Also, do you think this would be just as ugly and out of place as the white freezer or do you think it would blend better?

Honestly, I would still hate that in my kitchen even if I put a tablecloth over it. I prefer islands to have that 'kitchen island' look. I think if Tim wants the damned freezer in the house, it should go in his mancave room. He could get a mini fridge to sit on top of it to be a beer/snack fridge or something.
  • I should've married you Mara. We'd have an awesome freezer-free kitchen
I wouldn't like the black freezer in the kitchen either. Does the new house have a laundry room big enough for the freezer to go in?
    Posted by ILoveMilkDuds
Nope. The laundry is essentially a large closet. Really, the only options are the garage or the kitchen.

I'm trying to find a compromise so that we both get sort of what we want, without me going all mega-bitch.
    imageimage
  • Maybe the freezer will break. They don't handle movement well.
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • I still wouldn't compromise on this one. Is the garage big enough to hold the freezer and still everything else you want in it? Sorry, but having it in the kitchen will just look bad. At the very least, I like your idea of the table over it with the flip-top, but since he's not willing to do that then I say either the garage, or get the movers to put it in his "man space" and let him deal with it.

You could always get a window AC thing for the summer in the garage, that's what we have.
  • Sesh - The garage is plenty big enough to hold that freezer.

I'm trying to be diplomatic here, but he has to give a little too. I'm going to present him with several options that would bother me the least and tell him to pick one.

I'm not totally unreasonable, but I will not have that white monstrosity sitting in my kitchen.
    imageimage
  • Yeah I have to agree with everyone else here Jen, the freezer belongs in the basement/garage. This is not up for discussion. Tell him I said so, and see if you come visit me, we can bring it up in conversation and my DH can tell him what an awful idea it is! Win-Win!

This is key. It was very generous of you to offer either the black freezer or to give up your island if he'd be willing to build the freezer into an island. The fact that he thinks there is only one option, and that's putting a giant monstrosity of a freezer next to your island and turning a wholesome space into a crowded one, is a problem.

I kinda think this needs to work out in your favor. Getting the energy to put together weekly meals when you're tired and don't feel like doing it is no joke, and having a harmonious space should be the first step.

We're both very particular AND very stubborn. I totally understand where he's coming from, but he needs to see my side too.

He only cares about functionality. I want things to function and be pretty.

  • I'm another garage vote.  You've given him two other options and he poo poo'd them.

The other thing would be if he insists on putting it in the kitchen, then, by golly, I think you need a big craft area in his man cave.  I bet that'd work out reaaal well.  :-)
