Snarky Brides

I know we have a few counselors/therapists here...

Don't worry, I'm not going to ask you to therapize me.  Lurker counselors/therapists, please chime in as well--I only know of a couple that actively post, but I know there has to be more of you out there.

I'm currently researching for my next degree.  I have a BS in Corrections with a Psych double major.  I did a year in a Forensic Psych MS program before deciding the program, school, and state were not somewhere I could stay for another year.

I was planning on getting my MSW.  Because I don't have a BSW, it'll be about 3 years of school for me.  Not a problem, but I'm also looking at some (closer, geographically) Community Counseling type programs.  The main problem is that I don't know EXACTLY what I want to do.  I'm very interested in working with families with kids that are at risk of out of home placement.  I'm interested in working with kids in general (with behavioral and emotional disorders).  I'm also interested in advocacy type stuff.  I know that an MSW would give me more flexibility, but the Counseling programs are all shorter, closer, and cheaper.  I'm fine with spending the extra time and money if the MSW is going to truly benefit me more, but at this point, I'm not convinced the difference would be worth it.

So.  Tell me what degree you have, and if you wish you'd have done it differently.  Tell me what I should be looking for in these programs, because I'm overwhelmed and they all look the same.  Tell me what I should do with my life.

And in case you're wondering, I am not considering any clinical programs or doctoral programs at this point and if you suggest them, I will likely ignore everything else you say because I'm a brat like that.
