Which present for DH?

DH's birthday is Thursday, and mine is the day after. Since we're really broke, we agreed not to spend much on presents, but I'd still like to get him something. I was thinking about getting him a watch with a compass in it, since he's a total backpacking geek and loves the whole he-man in the wild thing

I've found three under $50, but the coolest looking one (#1) is only a compass, not a watch. Which might be weird.

Which one? Or none?

Ok, this might be a totally idiotic question, but the first one said it works anywhere in the northern hemisphere.  Is that normal?  For it to only work in the norther hemisphere?  I mean, I get that things get wonky when you change hemispheres, but yeah....?

I like the look of #3, but I think #2 might be better for a serious backpacker because #3 has a digital compass which scares me (here I show my ignorance about outdoorsy stuff) because I would be afraid it would die or something at the worst possible time wheras a magnetic one doesn't really die.
