What started out as a compliment ended up depressing me

I was at Best Buy today to buy the new Avenged Sevenfold CD. I was paying and the guy behind the counter was all perky and said, "Wow, that's some rock you've got there, looks like you picked the right guy." I said, "Thank you, he did great, I love it." He said, "That's got to be at least 4 carats, yes?" I was like, "Oh no, it's only 1 but I have small hands so it does look bigger." Then he got all depressed and said "It's really beautiful. Unfortunately I'll never be able to afford to buy one of those. I guess it doesn't matter anyway because I'm never even going to find a girlfriend." I thought he was about to burst into tears. I just replied, "Don't give up, it will all work out for you" and I left the store worried this poor guy was going to kill himself and 7 hours later I'm still thinking about him.

Awww poor guy. We all have bad days. Maybe you could call and check on him? IDK. I might lol.

Okay it sounds like I answered my own suggestion. I meant I might call and check on the guy if it seemed that bad.

That poor guy! I hate comments like that because you feel like whatever you say you will come off as smug and all knowing. Just say a prayer for him/send vibes because it seems like this guy wants to love some one! You definitely said the right thing though.

I always think about this stuff after it happens, too.  Maybe that has more to do with my job, though---my first instinct is always, REPORT IT!! 

Not really an option here, although I might call, too   I just can't get stuff like this out of my head.

I know, I know, my questions kind of inappropriate but I feel sad for him and I'm curious as to why he feels like he can't get a GF. Even if he isn't cute (imo- or yours) it doesn't mean someone wouldn't like him. Basically, I want to help him?

He was cute in more of an adorable kind of way and not so much a handsome kind of way, but definitely not unattractive.

He probably owned the store, has an exotic car and was just working the register for someone that called in sick but wants you to come back to check on him and buy more stuff. :-)

Maybe write a letter to the store manager just saying that X employee have me great service, and then his boss can give him some encouragement/promotion.

As much as I feel bad for him, I have to say that I really really hate people who say things like that. I know we all have times when we're feeling down, but those kind of comments, especially to a perfect stranger, just seem incredibly manipulative and attention-seeking to me. I just don't see a reason to say something specifically designed to make people feel bad for you, but that's my opinion.
