Tom's Shoes

Do you have a pair?  Are they the best shoes ever like my sister says?

(or never heard of them like me until three days ago? It's an online shoe retailer... his shoes are around $50... they're canvas sneaker-type shoes.  And when you buy a pair, a pair goes to a child who needs shoes.  I love the idea.  But I am always wary of buying shoes online.)

Should I get one?  I kind of want these: http://www.toms.com/womens/classics/black-siebe-perforated-nylon-women-s-classics  Except I feel like if I'm buying them, I should get orange or something fun

  • I don't have any because I'm kind of a shoe snob.
It is legit though, I've seen the guy doing some promotional stuff.  I think it's an awesome idea.

  • That's what I'm worried about... that they'd fall apart.  I'm not a shoe snob, and I work in a really casual office (I wear jeans every day.  Today I'm wearing flip flops.) so they wouldn't really be out of place.  I just want comfy shoes that aren't my running sneakers or flip flops.

  • They're actually pretty durable from what I've seen. I have a bunch of friends with pairs, mostly because Hanson supports them as well; they do one mile barefoot walks before their shows to raise awareness of how hard it is to function without basic necessities, like shoes. And they took a whole bunch of Toms Shoes to Africa about a year and a half ago.

Regardless, I'm still with Champagne on this one - I'd rather donate $50 and get a nicer looking pair of shoes elsewhere.

  • I dig the shoes. I am guilty of being a bit of a hipster at times though, and that is certainly the vibe the look of the shoes give off. I don't actually own a pair though, but I've heard they are great shoes and comfy. I'd just check out the return policy, in case they run smaller/larger or you just flat out hate them on yourself. I have super narrow feet so since they don't lace up and are canvas that is what has made me nervous about getting a pair.
  • Several friends of mine have some and they really like them. They say that they are durable. I personally think they look like topsiders or boat shoes, but if thats your style more power to you.

[QUOTE I would rather donate my $50 instead of buying a pair.

This. If you aren't even sure you like the shoes, why not just give money to an organization?

Tom's is still a for-profit enterprise. It's one thing if you are planning on buying the shoes anyway and, hey, great, they do some good work!

But if you are doing it with the intention of giving to charity, then I would just give directly to a chairty.

  • I have a pair of Tom's and I love them. I think they are very comfortable and if you get the right color they will go with just about anything.

love love love. I have the black sparkly ones that I got for Christmas last year. I want at least 5 more pairs. they are definitely durable. I have them because I actually do like the shoes--they're comfortable without sacrificing fashion and I can wear them in the winter when I usually put my flats and flipflops away. the fact that they're a charity is a bonus.

  • Ugh.  Scott wrote a blog post about Tom's shoes and the lack of sustainability, for-profit entity masquerading as a non-profit blah blah blah and he got some very ANGRY comments.  Apparently a link to his blog got posted on Tom's facebook page and someone (who supposedly worked for Tom's, I hope not) left him some pissy comments.  It really turned me off to the whole thing even more.

The kicker is the blog post was mostly about Ethos Water, the Tom's part was mild.
