Re: .

  • You'll never see me post a bio or anything like that.  It took me forever to even post an actual picture of me, and not just Box Kitty.  I am FB friends with a bunch of knotties, but I talk with most of them off TK as well.  I deny a lot of FB friend requests from people that I don't talk to off TK and I regularly clean house.

Not because I'm worried about them canceling my vendors, etc, but just because I don't need random internet people (internet "friends" or not) knowing much personal info about me.

Everything the light touches is my kingdom.
  • Oh, and I've also been really careful about posting complaints about my job (aside from just the fact that I work too many hours) or specifics about stuff that happens at work just because I'm paranoid a coworker or supervisor or something will see it.

    image
Everything the light touches is my kingdom.
  • It would be pointless for me to be worried about people knowing my name, considering that the profession I'm working towards requires people to know who I am. I don't say a whole lot about H because he prefers me not to, and I would never post anything about a fight w have or anything else that people might remember.

As for FB, I'm friends with a lot of people from here but only the ones I trust not to go BSC on me. And I don't post work rants or anything that could be held against me on FB because I have work friends on there and a supervisor. And even if I didn't, you just never know.

Even my profile here is privatized. I don't mention specifics on the city I live in, weekend plans/locations, schools I went to, wedding venues, nothing like that. And using your real name and email is pretty foolish as well. A lot of knotties get around the email thing by using a junk email for knotting, such as theirknotsn@gmail.com or something. Then they can give it out here without much worry.

Do you remember when Fish posted her wedding video link and there were like 500+ hits on it even though there were only like 25 regs online?  THAT creeps me out.

See I disagree, only because I've seen a lot of people who think they are normal but really are bat-frickin crazy. You know, you're right.  I guess when I said "normal precautions" i meant normal for me.  People DO put a lot out there.  Valid point on your part.  :)

So when i say precautions, I mean modern common sense in the internet age.

  • I have "internet friends" from other forums on Facebook but I restrict them from seeing certain information on my profile such as my hometown, current town, and work and school information. I do like to be somewhat careful what I post on this board and other fully public forums, but I belong to a forum that's been closed off to the public for YEARS and on there I'll post just about anything.

It's true, you could be anyone.  I guess I have no way of knowing for sure you're a lady.  You could be that old man in his underoos.

Sometimes I wish my last name was Rodgers.  I'd let him complete a pass or two, oh yes I would.  Even if he is a little goofy looking.

When I was young and stupid, I agreed to meet a guy IRL who I "knew" from a roleplaying community on AOL.  (No, not THAT kind of roleplaying!  The nerdy kind!  Elves and dwarves and all that.)   Anyway, he turned out to be really pushy and wouldn't take no for an answer, so things didn't go very well for the naive and sheltered 18 year-old me.

I don't blame the Internet for that, though.  I blame me for being stupid and my parents for failing to prepare me for life on my own.  You can't forbid your teenage daughter from having friends and boyfriends and expect her to survive college guys unscathed.

I guess the way I see it is that there are shitty people IRL and on the Internet.  The medium doesn't really change things.  Anyone you meet out and about in the world can hurt you, and you certainly won't have a screen name to hide behind.  So I don't go to any great lengths to protect my identity online, but I do make a point of being aware of my surroundings, being wary of people, and not taking unnecessary risks in the real world.

eta - This took so long to type that the entire tone of the thread changed.  Now I feel awkward about posting.  :P

Haha, sorry Anna! Um, I meant figurative dolls. You have to admit that popular regs like that have some weird fans. Backwards fish anyone?

My point is that, when you start posting here, you have no idea the fans or enemies you'll make, or how interested people will be in your life, so it's best not to have a backlog of personal information for anyone to dig up, whatever their reasons.

  • I don't post a lot of really personal things, and I try not to ask other knotties things that I wouldn't feel comfortable sharing.  I posted more specific wedding things on my local board while I was planning, like venue and vendors and such, but I'm personal friends with many of my vendors, and I kept in contact with the others, so I wasn't too worried about it.

So why do you just lurk?  Internet security concerns?  Just don't like to talk to us?

  • I feel like I am much more reserved than I used to be with posting the longer I'm here (and the more craziness I see). I try to keep any H gripes to myself or to individuals and try not to complain about family because one of my dad's teachers is on TK somewhere *shifty eyes*. My cousin is also engaged now so I will probably try to avoid talking about family as much as possible jic. Nothing I say is particularly mean or things I wouldn't tell them, but I think it could be wrongly interpretted very easily.

I also never posted about Psmart when I worked there or I would have gotten canned. Now I talk about work but not where I am specifically.
  • It's okay, I'm on the mailing list. I can get more.
