Nail Polish

How do you apply nail polish?  I can never seem to keep it on my fingernails.  I do one coat and it stays for 2 days.  I do 2 and it's chipping by evening.  Is this a top coat problem?  A primer problem?  Help me you beautiful women, you.

Re: Nail Polish

  • Nah... two days sounds about right.  Unless there's some super polish that is chip proof - which there very well may be.  I just haven't found it :)

  • I usually do like 3 or 4 coats and a top coat. My nails are crazy long so I end up going through nail poilsh like no one's business, lol.

    I do two coats of polish and then topcoat. I can usually go chip-free for about 4 days before touch-ups are needed.

  • I need to find an awesome bottom coat.  I have a top coat that's rock hard (Secre Veche?  Something like that) and doesn't chip, but my polish will start to peel away instead because it's not sticking to the nail.
  • I rarely do my nails, but when I do, I apply 2 coats then a topcoat.

    However, I will never again use whatever kind I used on my toes. I can't get the damn stuff off. No amount of polish remover is working and it won't chip, it just gradually breaks off at it's own whim. And it's a bright silver/blue, which looks goofy on my big toe because the nail is almost black, so there is a spot of brightness that looks totally out of place.
  • One of the best ways I've found to help avoid that "chipping by evening" problem with applying two coats is to let the first coat SET completely (not just dry).  So I wait a couple hours.  Plus, the second coat then drys a whole lot faster.  So I do a coat, let it dry for about 15-20 minutes, then go about my day, and a few hours later, do the same thing again.  I find it helps extend the chip-free-ness a couple extra days.

  • I've found that chipping is much less noticeable with lighter colors as well. Now that I've actually grown mine out, I do my own French tips, and they last a week or two before they're too badly chipped and have to be redone. When I wore dark colors on my nails they'd chip after 2-3 days.

  • OPI Natural Nail Base Coat is awesome.  I do my nails in stages like JK said.  I apply base coat, wait an hour, first coat, wait an hour, second coat, wait an hour, top coat. I usually do it during football sundays when I have tons of time that I can sit around and wait.  But it does last for at least a week.

    My favorite brands, and the ones that seem to last the longest are the cheap ones.  Wet N Wild will last twice as long as most of the others.

    [QUOTE]What's everyone's favorite nail polish?  I love OPI.  And I love the names of their colors...always thought it would be fun to have the 'name the color' job. Sesh, I wonder if you use the product that my nail lady does on my toes -- it's a shellac so it never ever chips.  Have you tried soaking your toes in polish remover or even straight acetone?  Non-acetone remover would not get it off.  When it's time for a polish change on my toes, she wraps each toe with remover and lets it sit for 5-10 minutes and then it just peels right off.

    I love OPI as well. Their website is awesome.

    I bought a nail polish kit that does this.  It's a transfer thingy that I can't explain, but I love it.  The polish will last a long time as long as I'm not digging into something or doing hard cleaning.  Of couse, it's not an everyday style, so I don't use it alot.

  • I use OPI pretty frequently.  I think I might try out the chip skip stuff.

    How do I apply it?  I go to a nail place and get a manicure and pedicure for $25.  ;-)

    It lasts for a week before chipping.  They actually wrapped up my feet on Friday in plastic bags and some crazy oil stuff so my polish wouldn't get messed up on my way home.  They then put my shoes and socks on so I wouldn't mess up my hands.  But I digress...

    When I do it on my own, it's a bottom coat of clear, two coats of color, one top coat of clear (Sally Hansen double duty), I wait about an hour, then go to bed.  They almost always come out nicely and don't chip for several days to a week.  And I use my hands a lot at work!

    </div><div>No one has as nice of colors as OPI.  I've also found that their stuff lasts much longer in the bottle.  I bought a Wet 'n Wild over the summer, and now only a few months later it's all gummed up inside.  It's too thick to really use.  But I have OPIs that are years old that stick act like new.

    </div>
  • I only by Wet N Wild when I need a random color for something I probably won't use again.  The 97 cent part rocks.

  • I like CND base coat and top coat.  I apply the base coat, two coats of color, then the top coat.  If I am careful with my nails it lasts one week before the tips are starting to show.  I use my nails to type on my phone so it's hard for me to keep polish on for a while.

    I also like the Seche Vite that someone mentioned, but my color started peeling as well.

    I had to google it!  Haha.  I like it, but it's hard to put on sometimes because it will glob near the nail bed or go on too thick.  Does that ever happen to you?

    NightSprite, I forgot to say that I will often continue to apply the base coat, color and top coat under my nail tip to seal it in.  I got that suggestion from somewhere and it seems to work.

  • I love Orly, Essie and China Glaze btw.
  • I love OPI... I use their clear coat as the bottom coat before I put any other shameless brand color on (if it's not OPI), but they aren't cheap either!

    </div><div>Yeah, it tends to end up on the outside of the nail, then when I try to clean up that area is when it will peel because the top coat is so thick.

    </div>
  • The best way to do it is, apply base coat, two coats of color, then top coat. Apply the base and top coats around the edges of your nail, too.
    And I'm in love with OPI and almost use that nail products exclusively. ULTA usually has them on sale, like buy 1 get 1 or buy 2 get 1. Right now they have 2 for $10, which is the best deal all year.
    Oh, but right now I'm sporting Brucci nail hardener which was recommended to me by someone. My whole life I've had excellent nails, but just within the last month or so, they've been SUPER brittle. So I'm trying it out and hoping for the best. I'll let you know how it goes lol.
