In the U.S. animals that we breed for food are in some cases not treated very well at all.

Here's an excerpt from Peta's website:

In the U.S., more than 42 million cows suffer and die for the meat and dairy industries every year. When they are still very young, many cows are burned with hot irons (branded), their horns are cut or burned off, and male cattle have their testicles ripped out of their scrotums (castrated)—all without painkillers. Once they have grown big enough, they are sent to massive, filthy feedlots where they are exposed to the elements, to be fattened for slaughter. Many female cows are sent to dairy farms, where they will be repeatedly impregnated and separated from their calves until their bodies give out and they are sent to be killed.

This is coming from Peta though, who's intentions I support, but their actions sometimes not so much. However, There's been quite a few reports about this from other sources, even hidden camera video of things happening on farms and slaughterhouses to all types of animals.

• PETA is full of crazies. I don't even support most of their intentions. Do you have pets, LTZ? If so, you don't support their intentions either.

Got it. I get that's what you meant. But did you know they're against people having pets at all? They think all animals were meant to run wild. Sure...maybe back before people domesticated them and some animals have evolved into total house pets.

• Blah! TK ate my response!

I disagree with JK about sex offenders. I don't care if they can be rehabilitated or not, they don't deserve to be. They deserve to rot in prison, their original crime denotes them ever being "productive members of society" in my eyes. I don't understand why we are so quick to send a murderer to prison for life and not a rapist. Forgive and forget?

I also disagree with comparing the statistics to cheating or anything else. Sorry, but I'm going to need 100% guarantee that guy isn't going to rape me if he's moving in next door. Not 99%. Not 60%. I think that's fair to ask.

Also, cew, I know you didn't mean anything by it, but the phrase "a life time of fuckedupedness" kinda bugged me, when you could just say "long term problems". I'm just sensitive about this topic though.

Yeah believe me, so much of their stance is utter bullshit. But the thing about PETA is, with all their crazy antics in some instances, it get's people's attention on the issue. I know it worked for me. I never thought too much about fur before. Did I know it was from animals? Sure. But did I know that the animals were kept in cages, then grabbed by their back legs, their heads smashed into the ground several times, and then skinned alive? No, not before seeing a PETA video (or only half of it, because I couldn't even watch the rest).

It could be exaggerated based upon the farm you grew up on. Unfortunately, that's not every farm.

I didn't say every farm participates. I think the majority of them don't. I just don't think that saying it's an exaggeration because you grew up on a farm is fair either. Also I had mentioned and so did the article about it being in the U.S. She's in Canada, which for all I know could be totally different. i'm not making any assumptions on that. I definitely don't solely base my opinion from PETA, I just happen to find that article quickly and also followed up with one from the humane society as well. Some places treat animals badly some don't.

Reils had said this: I have always been under the impression that dairy cows are treated humanely. If someone has info stating the opposite I'd like to know.

True. I am sure that there are farms where people don't care how they treat their animals. I do however, think that PETA is twisting words to make it sound like horn trimming and castrating are these horrible things when that is not true. At least not from my experience in rural Canada.

ETA: I think that PETA purposely makes things seem worse than they to help their cause. I am not saying that there aren't cases where farm animals are mistreated.
• Jumping in late...

In my state a lot of people have to register as sex offenders for really, IMO, minor infractions. Literally, 13 yr olds who snapped a girl's bra. Don't get me wrong, I think bra snapping is naughty, but it hardly makes a person a sexual predator. So, at least my state, yeah, I think some sex offenders can be rehabilitated, cause they're not all child rapists.

Milk is gross.

Baby goats are super cute, but not as cute as baby sheep.

• Are we still doing this? I'm late, and still reading. I just wanted to say that I agree with J&K about sex offender rehabilitation. Inappropriate sexual behavior is a learned behavior.

The only thing that actually causes sexual arousal is genital stimulation. At points in all of our lives, other things are associated with sexual pleasure. (i.e. low lights, soft music, etc.) For sex offenders, an inappropriate association was made, and that behavior needs to be modified.
I want to do behavior modification someday, so I'm pretty firmly in the camp that behaviors can be controlled, shaped, and changed.

I'm not a parent, and I certainly can't comment on what is fair punishment, but I do bellieve that some can be rehabilitated.

• PETA are freaking nutcases and I will not believe 90% of the videos they post on the internet or television. I have seen way too many documented cases where PETA members (higher ups, not local crazies) would do shiit like blow up pet stores (with animals and people in them) or take every animal out of a shelter and then euthanize them because "it was better than any life they would get otherwise'. I also had a member of PETA on my ass for 2 years when I worked at a pet store because she said we were abusing our animals (we weren't, and you guys know me enough to know I would NEVER hurt an animal). She also broke into one of my quarantine rooms with a crowbar and set our sick, baby cockatiel (who was being handfed per vet orders) loose in the freaking store. We found him 30 minutes later when a dog had chased him under a shelf and was barking.

I think, for me, it largely depends on what the sex offender's crime was. Being 19 and having sex with a 16 year old (consentual), whatever. Urinating outside at a frat party and getting caught, whatever. Raping someone? Not whatever.
• I do not agree that most serious sex offenders can be rehabilitated. That is why the have the highest recividist rate of all criminals. If you are a pedophile, it is pretty much garuanteed that you will do it again. This is why most pedophiles will even agree that the only that could possibly stop them is being locked up or being chemically castrated. Have we forgotten that people need to PAY for their crime? Certain types of truly heinous crimes cannot and should not be forgiven. When you treat a human being and/or an innocent young child like they are a subhuman piece of meat, you do not deserve mercy.
I also beleive that all rapists who commit murder in the act of rape should get the death penalty every single time. Such a crime is so horrible for the victim that the offender should not be allowed to live with those thoughts and memories. They need to pay the ultimate price, as they conciously and brutally inflicted on their victim.
This may sound harsh and semi unpopular, but its the way I feel...
• Uh, first of all, sex offenses are not even CLOSE to having the highest rate of recidivism. Drug and alcohol related crimes are much higher.

Second of all, I think you're confused, and are looking for the term "child molester" instead of "pedophile." One can be a pedophile and never once in his or her life touch or look at a child inappropriately. That's a big pet peeve of mine.

• About the picky food thing, I'm going to get all on my soapbox about this right now, but I think you're parents are right about "starving" the kids. In my family, my mother was not a short order cook, if we didn't like it, we went without. I know someone who died today, and her liver failure was DIRECTLY linked to her poor eating habits. If she had been less picky, she may have eaten better and would still be alive today. She was 55.

My UO is that Michelle Duggar's dr should have just pulled her uterus when they took out the last baby.

• Oh, and for the record, I never said sex offenders shouldn't serve their sentences or anything about them not going to prison, etc. I just see no reason why there can't be some treatment included.
