My wife and I had a baby two months ago and I am selling my wifes excess breast milk. She is producing enough for 2 babies. They are frozen in storage and have a life expectancy of 5-6 months frozen.

My wife has been on pre-natal viatmins, calcium and viatmin C. She also is very careful on what she eats and is a healthy young adult.

Each bag has 8 Ounces of milk.
Asking $5 per bag (8 ounces) of milk.

WTF! I've heard of women in third world countries breast feeding for family/friend's kids because they can't produce milk (usually due to malnurishment) but selling your breast milk on craigslist is nuts.

I find it even wierder that its written from the husband's perspective. Like he's pimping out her breasts to make money.

I mean, I can see donating it to a milk bank, but something seems wrong about profiting from it. Not to mention dirty - there are lots of diseases that can be transmitted through BM. Who would just buy that off the street?

I'd rather steal formula than buy some woman's breastmilk off craigslist and I'm completely against stealing. That's saying something.

That's just....I don't even know what to say.

I think that should be illegal (and not just because it's gross). If someone wants to donate, or even sell breast milk I think it should be regulated like when you donate blood.

There has to be some kind of standards, not just some random guy peddling breast milk online.

    That's what i was thinking.

$5 for unscreened breast milk is ridiculous. It's cheaper per ounce to buy your baby a nice aged whiskey.

I wonder if he even has a wife or if the woman even knows about this. At five freakin' dollars my guess is no. Grooooosss. So gross.

It's actually illegal in some states to sell it. You can donate it or give it but can't sell it.

WOW! They should try selling it in Europe where some places use it for ice cream.

On a side and sad note, one of the kids I had (crisis counseling) lied about her age and was selling herself on craigslist.

i don't understand any outrage or grossness.

No, I wouldn't ever want to feed my hypothetical child any milk (whether breast or powdered) that did not have any kind or reassurance about the quality and possible pathogens.

I also would not pay $5 for 8oz of breast milk regardless of quality. Thankfully, powdered formula has come far enough that it really is a decent alternative to breast milk.

However, i totally understand someone selling/donating their breast milk. Tons of people are fanatical about how breast milk is THE BEST. So why wouldn't a person who had extra want to offer it to people who can't have it otherwise?

Really? I had no idea! Is it because it has lots of vitamins? I had never heard of donating breast milk before. Seriously, I learn a lot on this board!

i think the main thing is that although formula can provide all the nutrition, breastmilk also provides much needed immunity boosters. You can find out all about breastfeeding here: http://www.llli.org/

I couldn't breast feed 2 of my kids for medical issues I was able to for a few months with my youngest and something happened. I can understand about wanting the best (breast milk) for your child.

But to sell it like that? or let alone buying it not knowing? no just no.

It's weird. That's pretty much all I have to say. I think they should definitely donate it. Can it be considered a tax write-off? :p

Absolutely! It's funny how different my sister and I are even though we share the same genes. She's so maternal and has 3 beautiful children and I can't even imagine how I'd handle one. But I digress..

That's what skeeves me out about it. Wet nursing (someone else nursing a baby other than their own) is not a new concept, but I think it's naive/stupid to just trust that this total stranger on craigslist is healthy and will give your baby the nutrition they need. At least get it/give it to a reputable source.
  • Options
i agree with anna oscar - i don't think it's gross, etc. because wet nurses and breast milk donations obviously exist - but unwise without prescreening - certainly

this just makes me sad to think what a desperate situation they must be in that they have considered selling the breastmilk (vs. keeping it/donating it)

i'm not really sure if this is even legal? i don't see anything wrong with receiving purchased or donated breast milk from a reliable source (not craigslist lol).

i also really hope that new mothers are being educated about diseases that can be passed through breast milk, not to mention certain drugs and other things the mother could have put in her system. in the hospital breast milk is handled just as blood is with gloves and certain waste receptacles. it worries me that a lot of people may not realize there is actually some danger in handling someone else's breast milk.
