Items made from MOG/MOB's dress???

My sister texted me today - her BSC FMIL wants to make my sister a garter to wear from her wedding dress. I've never heard of such a thing, and I think it's super weird. My sister said my mom was thinking that the MOB is supposed to have the garter made from her dress for the bride to wear. I didn't do this - I bought my garter.

Does anyone know if there's a tradition or something where the MOG or MOB has something made from her dress for the bride?

This is a P&R, I'm going to head home.

  • I got nothing Brooklyn, I have never heard of this in my life. Maybe she can say she already bought one, or isnt wearing one.

  • Never heard of that.

In my family, the bride usually has her dress made into a Christening gown for future children and saves a bit of fabric in case a future daughter needs something old.  i wrapped a bit of my mother's wedding dress (made into ribbon) around my bouquet.
  • I've never heard of it. I could see like pinning some lace onto a dress, or making a handkerchief from part of it, but a garter? Errr, no.

My mom took the handkerchief she carried and embroidered her initials in one corner, and then mine in another, and gave it to me to carry for my wedding.
Unfortunately, it was for my first wedding. I do still have it. I think it was the only thing I felt was worth saving.

  • I've never heard of this either.  But I will say that I "forgot" to put on my garter at the wedding.  So we didn't do a toss.
  • Only thing close that I know of is my cousin used a bit of my aunt's wedding dress to embelish the RB's pillow.

  • I;ve never heard of this, but I have heard of making a Christening gown for your children out of your own wedding gown. FWIW, we sold my mom's wedding dress at a garage sale after the divorce.

  • I've heard of making a Christening gown, also. I suggested that she suggest to her FMIL to make a bouquet ribbon with it. There's just something weird about wearing what is essentially a piece of lingerie made from your MIL's clothing. Weird.
