Snarky Brides

What do you live in?

This just popped into my head, and I'm curious to see how the answers come out over the next few days. For me, H and I live in a studio.

There's no real reason for this poll, just curiosity.

Re: What do you live in?

  • We live in a multi story house, BUT we live in it with my mom, she lives in the basement and the rest of the hours is ours. When she dies (yes, this is morbid), the house is mine. She has discussed signing it over to me now so I dont have to deal with it when she does die.
  • One BR apt.

We used to live in a 2 story, 3 bedroom house, but we had the need to downgrade..

Now we're working our way back up.
  • Just a 1 bedroom apartment. I can't wait to move and rent a cute little house :)
  • MilkDude, I almost put "ranch" as an option! Damnit.
  • We live in a two story townhouse.

  • I get sick thinking about what some people pay just to rent. I realize that renting is a better option for some, but man. My car note is more than my mortgage (if you add in our insurance, it's escrowed, then it's more, but mortgage only, it's cheaper).

  • we live in a 2 storey 3 bed/2.5 bath house. we are selling in the spring though to build a 5 level split (sounds crazier than it is) on an acerage.

[QUOTE]Sarah, that used to be our situation. We gave up our 1400-square-foot, two-bedroom apartment near Chicago with free parking/laundry/backyard for our 650-square-foot studio in San Francisco (that we pay $400 a month more for). Surprisingly, it doesn't feel that insanely small. It helps that we have huge bay windows facing the street, but it's still crazy when I think about the two places inside my head.

I couldn't imagine living in a studio with Charlie. I think we would kill each other. We may be moving back east next year, though, so it's possible that we will have to downsize apartment-wise.

The good thing out here is that we have plenty of room to host overnight guests. ;)

I think of it like this. It sucks to pay someone else to rent and not put that money towards a mortgage, but then again we don't pay a penny for home repairs. For example, there are 2 huge pine trees that need to be removed that will cost our landlord thousands of dollars. If we owned, that would be our money.
  • We own a 2 bedroom 2 bathroom ranch.  We ended up here because there is a 3 car detached garage (FI's dream) and we are on the corner with a 1/2 acre lot (my dream).

This is half of the front of our place with my favorite tree in bloom.  It is about twice this size now.

  • We own a 1 br 1 bath condo.  I is 800 square feet.  If we would have waited 6 months to buy we could have got a 2br which I would love. Luckily though we have enough square footage to make a 2nd tiny BR, which is what we will probably do when we have a kid.

  • We own a 3 bedroom 2 story house on 18K square feet of land. Its not small but not huge. About 2000 square feet but we will finish the basement next year and add another 800 or so square feet. Best feature? 2 fireplaces!

Seriously though, a 2 bedroom/1.5 bath 3 level split house, 1100 sq ft.  It's sickening to look at what we could have if we would have bought after the housing crash, based on how much we paid for this one.

Ouchh!! We didn't have a down payment, but we qualified for Rural Development, which provides 100% financing because we bought outside of city limits. We were able to put that money that we had in savings towards our house. I hope you are able to buy soon!

  • 2-story townhouse.

Poli, we lived in a 650 sq.ft. apartment before this and we never finished unpacking.  We just had no place to put anything.  But, it was a 1-bedroom rather than a studio and I would imagine the studio is more open.
  • Chi_Chi-
It sucks, but it is what it is. We could buy a condo cheaper, but we really aren't interested in investing in that. I also get paid more living where we are, so it reflects in the price we pay.

  • We rent a 2 bed/ 2 bath + office house. It's small but the perfect size for us right now. It's one year old which is great, we have a guest bedroom and bathroom, 2 car garage, and Scott's "Man Room." It's small enough it doesn't take long to clean. Our town has a ton of houses for sale and with his job we doubt we'll be here long enough to make buying a house worth it in the end. I'm a little sad we're not homeowners, but honestly, not having to be responsible for a home is pretty great!

I completely agree. When a opossum crawls up and dies underneath the bathtub in the second bathroom, I don't deal with it. (That actually happened, and my landlord came over and took care of it.) The landlord does. When the AC leaks, not my problem. If the oak tree in the back crushes our bedroom, we've got renters' insurance and nothing irreplaceable in there. Like PP said, for our situation right now, this arrangement works really well for us. We love our house and we especially love not owning it.

  • We have been living in our split level house for about 6 months now. You all know the house buying saga :)

I love owning our own home. Yes it sucks when things break, but for the first time I feel safe. I don't deal with loud people above me, hearing people having sex, or worrying about stupid people setting their apartment on fire and it affecting me.

We also pay $300 less a month on our house bills (mortgage, insurance, taxes, utilities) than we did our rent, so there is definitely that plus as well.
  • LC--an opossum under the tub? I bet that smelled terrible. We have river rats here, and the genius who built our house decided it would be a great idea to leave lots of crawl spaces under the house covered by a layer of chickenwire. Good job, pal.

In our area there are a lot of older homes so you're guaranteed to be buying a fixer-upper unless you can afford something insanely expensive in a neighborhood with a HOA (which we will never do, HOAs don't allow for H's work stuff). We'd be filing for bankruptcy if we had to pay every time our AC broke or a rat chewed through our kitchen pipe. Still, I am looking forward to the day we buy our own home.

I wouldn't wish that smell on my worst enemy. For cereal dude. It started off like garbage that needed to be taken out and it took us a few days to figure out exactly where it was coming from. I wasn't home when FI and the landlord and my brother found it. I'm still very glad for that. But yeah, horrible smell. Horrible.

  • We own a 3 bedroom/2 bath house.  The 2 "regular" bedrooms are smallish, but since it's just us and the furry kids, it's ok.  We have a "Girl Cave" and a "Man Cave".

As for house repairs - if you don't have one SERIOUSLY look into a home warranty.  The last owners paid for the first year and we have kept it up.  We had to have our water heater replaced about 6 months ago and it cost under $400.  The water heater alone would've been twice that.  Yes, the warranty is reasonably priced about $470.  We also had a/c problems this summer (July in Texas-ugh).  The warranty paid for itself this year.

  • I bought our 3br/2ba +study McMansion 4 years ago.  I actually had it built, which was a surprisingly pleasant experience. I'm kinda glad I was single when I bought it, because I got to make all the design decisions myself.

  • Our apartment is perfect for us. Two (small) bedrooms and one (really small) bathroom. But we have a good sized living room and an archway leading into a big dining room. I have my desk on one end and we have a table and bar in there, too. H uses one bedroom as a den/office, and we have a futon in there, too. It's nice to have separate places we can retreat to if necessary.
