Snarky Brides

Themes

Do you have colour themes for your Christmas: how you decorate your tree each year, outdoor decorations, wrapping paper, etc?

Last year I did white and silver everything (that I could), this year Im doing red blue and silver with a somewhat ukranian vibe (dont ask why, it just appealed to me).

Do you have a theme, or just do the same every year? Do you send out christmas cards? Is it lame to colour coordinate your christmas cards to your theme??

Re: Themes

  • Yep, for the tree.  The first year we did purple and gold ornaments and the second year we did blue and silver. Since we don't have room for more ornaments, we'll recycle one of those choices for this year.

Any idea what colours this year?
  • My theme is always angels, since I collect them.

My gifted class teacher always had at least 3 full sized trees: One silver, one gold, and one multicolored.

  • I have a huge basket of pretty pinecones and I want to paint them silvery/navy - I have lots of red and lots of silver deocrations, but no navy.
    They would look like this:

  • I try to coordinate my gift wrap and my cards, but I usually fail.

Last year it was black, white, and silver. The year before it was red and gold. The year before that it was blue and silver. I still have leftover gift wrap from all those previous years. Eventually I'm going to have to have a "Get Rid of all My Old Wrapping paper and Accesories" theme.

  • Wrapping is sadly one of my favourite things about christmas, I just love doing it. My mom taught me well because they look superb, I cant for the life of me pack gift bags though.

Im the weirdo who sometimes wraps things TWICE.  :(

I think we'll go back to purple/gold.  It really popped against the tree.  Although, every time I go down the Christmas aisle in a store and see the different colored ornaments, I change my mind.  They have gorgeous pinks, greens, aqua, I always want every color.

I love the idea of red, blue and silver, though.
  • Ive always wanted to do gold!!
  • I've been doing our tree in gold (and gold glitter) ornaments for the last few years, with white lights, and these badass glass icicle ornaments that I got from overstock.com.

I often forget to send cards- really I only send cards to out of town family if I'm too broke to send them an actual gift.  I've never color coordinated cards with home decor.

  • Oh! And I usually do white lights outside with some wreaths with red bows on each window. However, today my awesome beyond awesome husband bought old school colored huge bulb lights, only they are LED! We are both far too excited about this. I absolutely cannot wait to have energy efficient bigass colored outside lights!
  • Ahhh crap, that reminded me leayn, I had been planning to get the big old school (looking) bulbs, but now it wont fit. Crap.
  • Noooo!  You have to find somewhere!  Maybe one strand around your door or something?

  • We don't have a theme really, although I kind of like the idea. Since we live in an apartment and have a fairly small (5ft) fake tree I just use the same decorations each year. I do one string of the white lights and one string of the different colored ones.

The one thing we do each year is go out and pick up ornaments at this German knick-knack store in the area. We try to find unique stuff, like beer stein ornaments or ones that relate to some event in our lives or our interests. I have a few little decorations and stockings for around the apartment too.

Someday, if and when I ever own a home I'd like to do more.
  • I dont think I have enough time to work all sorts of new lights into my christmas budget :(

    wrapping paper, etc?
I try and use what I have left, then buy more, so it changes every few years. Depends on what strikes me, but I like classic for adults, and fun for the kids.

  • My parents do white lights outside, and multicolored on the tree in the big bay window with important ornaments (i.e. baby ornaments, year ornaments, ornament families, etc).  It's GORGEOUS.  We will do this forever as it means Christmas to me.

I saw it done on a design show, if you put some paint in a tall tupperware type of container and shake you get even coating!

I love the old school big light bulbs!  I love it when I see those--they feel more Christmas-y than the modern ones.

I usually like the whole mishmash of colors - everything!  Our family has collected all sorts of bulbs and ornaments forever and EVERTHING goes on the tree. The bigger the tree, the better.  The more lights (all colors) the better.  There is a bit of a method to the madness though. Small lights going all over tree - big bulbs go on the bottom of the tree.  Bubble lights go around the outside.  Bigger bulbs go on bottom of the tree with smaller bulbs progressively up the tree. Its a crazy mess but we love it.  This year (along with the past 3) we won't have a tree though because hubby and I live in a 400 sq. ft. apartment and there is no room.  I visit my sister and help her with her tree.
