Inception Confusion (possible spoilers)

I just watched Inception. I swear I paid attention and while I get the bits and pieces of the movie it's not all fitting together. Did anyone see this and "get it" to the point that they can explain it in simple terms to me?

I'm blown away by this movie. I cannot wrap my head around it.

Re: Inception Confusion (possible spoilers)

  • It was all a dream.
  • I liked the movie too CCF. I just don't get it.

Thanks Any, but I feel like a moron because even after looking at your links, i just don't get it as a whole. I kept watching and each piece made sense to an extent, but as far as the whole movie fitting together from beginning to end, I just can't seem to grasp it.
  • I only saw it once, but my impression was that maybe it's not meant to fit together perfectly, and you should just enjoy it for what it is. Just picture Joseph Gordon Levitt in that hot vest, and you'll feel better. :)

Wouldn't it be nice to live together in the kind of world where we belong?
  • Ooo! Ooo! Pick me!

I just saw it night before last for the first time. I'm kind of talking out my ass, I know a lot of people have seen in multiple times and I am only paraphrasing, BUT

    My interpretation:

*One key phrase I picked up towards the beginning was "We have to go three layers deep".

*Also: we have to disguise the dream as a safe/vault type situation because the person will subconsciously store their secrets in it / we can plant secrets there.

*If they are going layers deep, the van crash was first layer, the hotel the 2nd (to which they had to fall back asleep), the snow the 3rd and final being why they had the "vault" scene there, (and then the city limbo level was never intended).

    * Going that deep wasn't only a mind trip, it slowed time more each time, hence why they could do so much in the little time it took for the van to hit the water.

*Any's first graph shows why the Asian dude got so old, look at the little crosses falling into limbo, dude went into limbo before Leo's character, that's why he was so old.

Any's second map is a good one, thanks Any  :)

The one part of Any's 'maps' that doesn't make sense to me: I thought the architect made up all the levels? Why is it showing each level "owned" by a different dreamer? Then what does the architect do?
Also the first one says the fourth level is Cobb's dream, then the second one shows it as limbo... hmmm

  • I agree with Reddy on her points, but I'm not sure what your specific question is. I understood the movie my way, and I know others have interpreted it differently. I think one of the biggest things to know is that time is different in each layer, which is why they could do so much before the van hit water. Also, in limbo a few hours is a few decades, if not more, which is why the guy is so old (that confused me at first).

As for the end, I choose to believe it's real. Some have said he's in limbo or dreaming because the kids are in the same positions, but I think the clothes are different. Also, he's not wearing his wedding ring anymore like he was in the dreams. As for the top, it does wobble a bit but if I remember correctly, it wouldn't spin for that long at all if he was still in that dream-state. Ultimately, it doesn't matter because he walked away from it. Dream or not, he was where he wanted to be.
  • See, somehow along the way I must have missed the part about time being different in each layer, which is kind of a HUGE part of the story.

I think I'm going to have to watch it again without as many distracttions as I had.

Thanks Sesh and Reddy for all the points about the movie.

Sarah- Believe me, I picture JGL often.

I agree. Also his Dad was never in any of his dream states and he was there at the end. It was totally real life.

I loved that movie - plus the motion graphics were AMAZING!
