• Hi there! I'm sitting here sort of watching the Colbert Report and trying to ignore the cat wrestling match currently taking place all across my bedroom. How are you? :)

I'm so sorry. I went to that wedding, and then I got sick, and then I moved, and then I went to that other wedding, and then I moved some more, and suddenly it was three weeks later. And the moment had passed. :(

  • Sarah, I stalked your bio (I am avoiding work like the plague) and I love the idea of a handfasting! I'm considering discussing this with FI since we will be a year out at the end of next month.

Sadly, we ended up not doing it. When we got to our one year out day, I was in Naples, and he was at our favorite beach in NJ without me. I still have the books, though, and we are going to be incorporating some of the wording that was in my main handfasting book into our actual ceremony. I've read a lot about them, so if you'd like to know more about handfasting, I'd definitely be happy to talk to you about it. :)

Oh, well, I'm sorry you didn't get to do it, but I'm sure the elements will all come together in your ceremony.

Do you recommend any books/sites in particular? I'm Irish, FI isn't. I'm more into symbolism, he's more literal, so anything I can research ahead of time and explain would probably make him more receptive to the idea. I've heard of them before, but never "met" anyone who was actually planning one.
  • Mission accomplished!
  • Woo-hoo on gold, Sarah!

This is the one I have:
    http://www.amazon.com/Handfasting-Wedding-Rituals-Welcoming-Blessing/dp/0738704709/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1288325213&sr=8-1

Warning: it's a pagan book and some of the stuff in it is completely out to lunch, like if you're handfasting two lesbians, one of whom believes in fairies while the other thinks she is a vampire. Or there are runes and gnomes and Norse gods and who knows what else. FI and I had a good time reading some of those aloud to each other. But there are also lots of ceremonies that are really nice, and you can kind of pick and choose to find what you like.

  • Thanks for the info, Sarah! FI and I are Catholic, but I've been wanting some kind of small, private, intimate ceremony for us. I think he'd like this.

That's the book I have, too. You're right, most of it is for hardcore pagans. But I did find some really good wording in some of the simpler vows that we are going to use in our handfasting. We're actually going to do our handfasting at the wedding, because I like the symbolism, and my FH is Irish. The good about handfasting is that you can tailor it to fit your beliefs and it can be as in depth or brief as you want it to be. I'm actually going to have a pagan friend of mine do the calling of the four corners before the ceremony, and then FH and I will just do the actual tying of the knot during the ceremony. It will be about two minutes of the wedding, but I love the idea. I say, if it's something that interests you, go for it!
