Salary Negotiation

Have you ever negotiated a salary successfully? I'm thinking about applying to this job that seems good in lots of ways, but is also marked as $37k to commensurate with experience. I've got the qualifications and lots of the desirables, but I've also been a career student. Obviously this only matters if they interview me and ask about salary.

Re: Salary Negotiation

  • Honestly, I'd say in this economy (I hate that line, but it really does apply here) I'd probably skip the salary negotiation coming right out of school. 37k in your field is better than Target because you can't find a job that meets your salary qualifications in your field. Get some experience, then worry about negotiating.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. Because trust me when I tell you honey, they're gonna need it. ~jcaruncho2010

  • I don't have much experience negotiating salary, but in this market I would first land the job, then after six months talk to my supervisor about a raise. If you bring it up at the interview, then if they have someone more qualified who's willing to take that salary, you're SOL.

[QUOTE]I agree with B and JK. Get your experience and then you'll be better able to negotiate salary in your next job, hopefully in a better economy. But when that time comes, be sure you add all your bonuses, overtime, vacation pay, etc for a true salary. That helps prevent lowballing your next salary negotiation like Sara did, and like I did when I took my last job. :)

  • I dont have any experience with this since in my career we make 2.63 and hour, lol.

However, I would not take less than what your experience warrants. 37K seems like a good start to me.

Does that include reviews with a possibility of a raise within the first year?

  • Have you ever looked online and compared your experience, education, etc. and the average salary for that job based on your lgeographical ocation? Careerbuiilder is one website where you can enter all the info and check.

Also, I would stress the point about the benefits attached to the salary. I took an ok salary in exchange for better healthcare (company pays my premium), more vacation, and flexibility. Higher salary with sucky benefits isn't necessarily better than lower salary with awesome benefits. Just depends on what is important to you.

Agree, there was an article somewhere that basically said benefits are worth an additional 30% of your salary. FI worked as a contract employee for a long time that paid higher, but had zero benefits. He took a job that paid about 10% less, but had benefits, so he technically worked up.

  • Night - What field are youg going into if you don't mind me asking? And in what region? Salary is pretty dependant upon that. Depending on these things I may have to disagree with the others and say whatever you do, don't start out on the low end for the field or else you'll be screwed in the long run. You don't want to be a "bargain" employee for the company, make sure the salary is in line with the regional/national average.

Also - I effin LOVE your sig pic.
