What do you think about Newt's comments?

Re: What do you think about Newt's comments?

  • I'm still waiting for him to explain where the money to pay these kids is going to come from. Either we're going to have to fire adults, adding to an already depressed economy, or we're going to have to put more money into the school budget to pay for the extra help.

And are we going to pay them minimum wage? Less?

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: What do you think about Newt's comments? : But that's not what he wants to do. He was talking about getting rid of the janitor's union and staffing it completely with kids except for one "master janitor". He's talking about positions that are already filled by adults. So what, we get rid of the assistant librarians they already have to have kids staff it? What happens to that adult who now has to find a new job? Or are we just going to add the kids to the payroll? Where is the money to pay them going to come from then? That's a lot of relaxing, in my opinion. And none of it is thought out.

I honestly didn't know that. I only read the article Sere posted. I completely disagree with the idea of replacing adults with kids to do the jobs.
  • Celles- I only say it because good ole Newty is famous for being outrageous and then coming back to "explain". He is a typical politician that way.

Outside of that, I do think he is a good guy, and had he clarified better, his point would probably make sense to those who disagree with what he actually said.

[QUOTE]Sere, I worked the max 26 hours/week. Almost every single week during high school once I turned 16. I also had 58 college credits when I graduated from HS. I helped take care of my siblings many nights too, so my mom could teach college classes at night. I volunteered with my church often. (I promise we weren't all as crazy as the guy we're currently arguing with on fb.) I made it out just fine, with a damn strong work-ethic, too, I might add. My studies didn't suffer. Sure, I didn't have as much time to go out and drink like some of my classmates, but so what?

Then I would for sure say you are one who CAN balance it all, and well too. But not everyone can. Also, if the max is already 26 hours a week, I don't see why Newt thinks labor laws are "stupid" and need to be changed.

The debate was very entertaining ;)

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: What do you think about Newt's comments? : The article doesn't say because Newt doesn't say, because Newt isn't thinking it through. If he wants to talk about allowing optional after school work programs for impoverished teens, then he should talk about allowing optional after school work programs for impoverished teens. Instead, he's talking about rolling back the same child labor laws that are designed to protect children from exploitation and abuse. In other words: Blue's sanitized interpretation makes him seem much saner than he is, lol. (The conversation has probably moved on since I started typing this. Damn work, impeding my ability to debate politics on the Internets. *shakesfist*)

I agree with you. I will completely admit that I'm basing my feelings/arguments on what I think/hope he meant. I don't think he's thought through this at all either, and a lot more thought needs to go into it before he should ever move forward with any plans to start changing things.

No one is punishing you for it. You worked 26 hours a week and it was legal.

He's saying kids ages 9-14 should be getting part time jobs to replace working adults.

I'm not a fan, in general, but I admit I was pleasantly surprised by his take on illegal immigration. I don't condone illegal immigration or support amnesty, but I do think that it's a very "gray" issue that most politicans (and people in general) tend to treat as black and white. It was nice to see someone talking about the human element -- even if he does bat for the other side politically.

But it's not against the law! high schoolers are already allowed to work, as they should be, if they can.

I stand by my opinion that child labor laws shouldn't be relaxed so younger kids can work too.

The biggest problem I have with this is that I find the idea that kids will have the option to work to buy themselves stuff is shortsighted. There is a good chance a lot of kids will be forced to work by their parents and that money will go directly to the parent.

I also think that taking away adults jobs and giving them to kids thereby creating more unemployed adults is idiotic.

  • I still don't get why the laws need to be changed/relaxed. Kids can already work a reasonable amount if they choose to. So what's the big deal?
