Snarky Brides

My brother is being a beebee groom

Text I got from my brother a week ago:  "How much money did your wedding cost, and how much did mom and dad give you?"

Um, good luck with that.

We exchange Christmas wishlists in my family and he sent his yesterday.  Today he replied all and said "Also, cash would be great, since we don't really have any to help pay for our awesome wedding. So definitely put that up as a higher priority for my list. Thanks guys!"

No joke.  Meanwhile, his gf is like super-bride.  She's been really sweet and gracious and they could get married by Elvis in Gatlinburg and she'd probably be fine with it.

Re: My brother is being a beebee groom

  • I would tell him that my parents provided the traditional dowry of a donkey. But since he's a boy, no donkey for him.

I usually respond to things like that with "Nunya".

    "Nunya what?", you may ask.

    NUNYA BUSINESS!
  • Oooh.. Fun. Luckily my parents were pretty open about how much they gave my sister, and they are gifting us the same amount.

    Did you ignore the text?
  • I like his lady.  But I kinda want to ram a spikey stick up his nose.

  • Sounds like my brother. Whenever Christmas/his birthday comes around, it's a list of things like "An iphone, xbox, superexpensivebrandofshoes" and goes on for about 2000 dollars.

Meanwhile, I'm like, an Amazon gift card, thanks!

  • I'd tell him he'd have to ask them.

And if they'd like, they can borrow a page from my grandparent's book and tell him "we don't love all our children the same".

This engagement is going to have lots of fun stories, huh?

    That's effing hilarious.

He's 24.  I told him that mom gave me some money as a Christmas present she set aside and it was enough to pay for my dress and alterations.  However, my parents were still married to each other then, and since they split, money has been tight for both of them, as my brother knows (moreso for mom, who would happily give him money if she had it, dad's just irresponsible).

  • I want to call my brother a beebee groom, because he probably will be. But that better not be for a long time, and not to the girl he's currently dating. Oh, God, would she be a beebee bride.

But I digress. I would probably tell my brother to bite me and go cry on mommy's shoulder, but that's just how we talk to each other. And I would give him a nice lecture on being an adult and not sending out Christmas lists like that.

Ha!  The irony of that would be that he's always been the golden child.  Sis and I started working when we were 15.  Brother didn't work until senior year of college when my mom could no longer afford to send him a weekly allowance and pay his fraternity dues.

I just replied all to the email:  "I believe a standard dowry is a donkey and a sack of coffee beans.  Would that help?  It's going to be hard to wrap the donkey so sorry if it isn't a surprise. "

  • That's so funny. I couldn't imagine my little sister ever asking me that. She knows better! She knows neither of our parents has any money..

Must be something about being a boy.  The favorites run the same way in our family.

Unless FSIL is a college girlfriend...that one could potentially backfire.

Well, he seems to have a point. I mean, there's the whole tantrum issue, but really, they didn't pay for his wedding and they paid for their other two kids' weddings? I'd be kind of pissed, too.

  • Yeah.. I think the whole paying for daughters' weddings but not sons' weddings is BS. I know people can spend their money however they want, and of course nobody is obligated to pay anything to anyone, but I think it's a weird gender thing. Why treat your children unequally? If you're going to pay for one and your financial circumstances haven't changed, it just seems kind of arbitrary.

Of course, he shouldn't have thown a tantrum about it. But I do find it odd.
In Response to Re: My brother is being a beebee groom : In theory I get what you are saying.  My parents went with the old school tradition and no one was more shocked than me when they offered to pay for my wedding.  My parents position was that the bride's parents pay traditionally and that he should take it up with them.  By the way I am speaking of my first wedding.  Joe and I are paying for this wedding.
    Posted by Kat Eyes
Right, I guess it just sucks if his fiancee's family doesn't subscribe to that tradition or can't afford it. They can't just MAKE her parents pay for it.
