Snarky Brides

Well, that was (and still is) scary...

I just had to go down to the basement and take cover from a possible tornado. I've lived in KC my entire life, and that was only the fourth or fifth time I've had to do that, and the first time alone. I took cover under a wooden coffee table and camped out for about an hour and a half. No damage done to my house. The storm is kind of rotating.

Sorry, I know this is kind of Live Journal-y, but I was terrified. Everybody please cross your fingers and hope that it's done!

It's pretty much doing the same thing here, except no sirens yet. But I'm pretty sure we're going to have to go downstairs soon. Stay safe!
  • I'll definitely cross my fingers and say a prayer for you.  I find tornadoes to be fascinating but I sure as hell never want to find myself underneath one.  I'm kinda bothered by the fact that we only have our storage room or downstairs bathroom (no basement) to take cover from in our townhouse.

I covered tornado aftermath for work once.  It was horrible.  I cried the entire way back to my office, an hour and twenty minute drive.

    I'm glad you're okay!

The sirens were going off for about 2 hours continuously. I'm in tears right now. I was shaky during the whole thing, but held it together. I think the adreniline (sp?) has worn off and the fear has caught up with me.

  • We had the sirens go off last night, but luckily no touch downs or anything. It makes me nervous.

WOW!  Glad that you are ok.....

I have never been near a tornado so I can't imagine what it's like....now hurricanes, been there for plenty of those suckers.

Are they calling for T's all day again?  I know they were over TX and OK last night

  • Oh, honey :( You poor thing.

I get that way during hurricanes. When it's happening, I'm calmer and more fascinated by the weather, staying away from windows yet trying to sneak a peak. Then it's over and I see the aftermath, and I lose it because I realize what really could have happened.

With all these tornados, I get the feeling we will finally have that awful hurricane season they keep predicting. Weather is getting scary.
  • Frick, npr is carrying the Kansas weather situation right now.  It sounds terrifying.

That's exactly what MS/LA needs is more water...

jcbsjr- I hope everything is ok out there! I know central Missouri is getting hit quite badly right now. H and I are both shaken up because of the tornado in Joplin. The storm seems to be rotating, but I'm hoping it stops.

OBX- Yeah, TX and OK got hit hard last night, and I know at least a few people were killed. The whole problem with this storm today was that it was more erratic than the normal tornado (if anything can be more erratic). Normal tornados stay on a specific trajectory. This one didn't. Also, a lot of the little systems are spitting out funnel clouds and tornados, so there is more than one danger.

We live on the river, so the water is up to our house during and after a hurricane. And our garage floods every time. That alone makes me miserable, I can't imagine how scary the concept is for LA and MS. And it sucks that they are so unpredictable, turning last minute and everything.

My worry here is our trees. We are surrounded by huge oaks and pines. They will all come down eventually.

    Nooooooo :(

As long as they all stay away from nags head on 9/16, we are fine :)  I fear the dreaded "H" word but also knew this was a chance we were taking when booking a beach wedding in mid-Sept.  I mean if it happens then so be it.......I just want to marry the hottie already ;)

Our house is luckily well above flood level but we are also surrounded by trees. We have over 2 acres and I would say 80% is shaded even in the middle of the day. We haven't experienced a hurricane in our house, so doing so will be interesting to say the least.

And all of the water is just beginning to get to us. I cross 2 small bridges on my way to and from work everyday and everyday I am noticing it getting closer and closer to the road.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Well, that was (and still is) scary... : Holy balls, exactly!  It was like the storm chasers kept spotting the rotating clouds all over the city!  And now it's nice a nd sunny outside.  WTF?  Our work even evacuated to the basement during the time when I was home for lunch.  FIRST TIME that's ever happened!  Glad you're feeling better!!

<div>I'm interested to find out how many tornados actually touched down today. I'd say at least 15 or 20. While I was in the basement, under a coffee table, hiding from the tornados, I had the TV on real loud so I could still hear the news, and it seemed like they had a new warning every couple of minutes, and the area was halfway across KS and MO because there were so many different funnels. Scary day.</div>

  • It is so hard to be on top of storm warnings when you work in a small newsroom that covers an entire state.  I work in Fargo, but if shiit's getting real in Minot or Bismarck or anywhere else, we have to be on top of it and reporting where it is and to take cover now and all that stuff.  It's stressful as hell.

  • I'm glad you're ok! What a scary thing. I "survived" a very minor tornado when I was at Girl Guide camp when I was about 10. We had about 200 girls cramped into a tiny basement and crying. Not fun.

Yeah, besides the rotation within the storm system, the ENTIRE system is rotating, so it's basically just spinning on top of us right now. Everyone in the area, stay safe!!!

  • There were several in OK last night.  One was right behind me as I drove home from work.  Unfortunately, there aren't a whole lot of basements here because our soil can't handle it.

I love tornados but when you see one outside your front door, kinda scary.
  • I hope the weather calms down soon for everyone! Tornados are scary, and I'm glad I don't live in the midwest anymore.
    Stay safe!!

  • SEWF stay safe! I don't know how you are being so brave, I think I would literally be shiiting myself. Come move to the west coast... a little shaking (like a vibrating massage) and then it's over. I don't understand how you all in the midwest can deal with tornados!
