Snarky Brides

Fallen Series

Does anyone read the Fallen series by Lauren Kate?  The first two books out are Fallen and Torment.  They are a young adult series about fallen angels.  The third book comes out sometime next year.

I discovered these a few weeks ago and have read both.  I don't think they're as good as Hunger Games or Twilight.  I guess I'm really into these supernatural kiddie books.  Harry Potter does it best though.

[QUOTE]But if Bella had a spine, then she wouldn't have fallen in love with Edward, and then what would the teen girls have to read? But then if Bella hadn't fallen in love, the whole twilight mess could have been avoided.

Honestly, if she had just left out all the emoness and whining and zomg emotional turmoil forbidden love gah, it would've been a good story. The whole Cullen vs. werewolves then the uhm, other vamps I can't remember was entertaining.

Except for the ending. It definitely would need a new ending.

The ending was such a cop out!  She was afraid or didn't have the balls or whatever to really take it there.  I was very disappointed.

I like the romance aspect of the story, but it was pretty cliched in that the romantic heroine was written as spineless, clueless and a martyr.  Men do fall in love with strong women, and strong women still do have dramatic and interesting lives.  It's lazy writing in my opinion.  I also never understood why everyone fell in love with Bella.  She seemed like a real downer to be around.

Gosh, I sound like such a hater.  I really do like Twilight.  I just find Bella to be an annoying character.  I pretty much love everyone except her.

[QUOTE]I wonder if anyone with a Psych degree has tried to psychoanalyze Bella.  If you read the books as if it were her diary, she comes off as really depressed.  No self esteem, no interests other than Edward, no friends (despite the fact that they try so hard), withdrawn from the world.

    Exactly. Not healthy!
  • I've read Fallen.  I have a pre-pub copy, so that should be taken into consideration.  The writing annoyed me.   Some of the small details didn't make chronological sense.  Things like Luce discovering something after it had already been mentioned.  There's no way that I, as the reader, should have known that the airplane engine was already running, except that Luce said she could hear it.  Then why do you need to tell me 3 pages later that the engine is starting.  That kind of thing bothered me.

    I haven't decided if I'll read Torment.
  • Yes, I remember stuff like that as well.  I just read Torment.  It was okay.  More action than Fallen, but I think Luce is sort of stupid in a Bella-like way.  I will probably read the next one when it comes out because I want to know what happens and apparently I have a high tolerance for bad writing.
  • See, I'm kind of like that too.  The books are such quick reads that I'll probably end up reading them anyway.  I hate not knowing how a story plays out.  It's the same reason I had to read all of Twilight, even though I hated the books.
