Snarky Brides

Homemade Christmas Gifts?

Hai.

Money is tight for one of my families (the biological one), so they've decided to exchange hand-made gifts this year.  My birth mom and sister have launched extensive sewing campaigns.  I don't know exactly what they have planned, but they're both pretty crafty.  Meanwhile, I don't have a lot of time between the move and the wedding to invest in an elaborate DIY project (and I kind of suck at it, anyway).

Does anyone have any ideas I could snipe-- er, take inspiration from?  :)

My de facto handmade gifts are homemade cookie tins, but I've done those before.  I'm sure they'd still be appreciated, but I don't want to be predictable if I can help it.

TIA!

  • Damn it, I was going to say cookies.  Would it still be predictable if you did peppermint bark and fudge too? ;)

Ummm...do any of them have kids you could offer to babysit for?  Or need help with something you could offer to help with?  Do you cook?

Everything the light touches is my kingdom.
  • Hmm. I have no advice. If it were me, I'd probably just make them awesome cookies and stuff. With FI, I wrote him love letters, and made him a photo album with a mix CD, cause I'm super cheesey like that.
  • Peppermint bark and fudge and cookies are great.  If they have dogs, home-baked dog biscuits are good, too.  Hand-made ornaments?  There are recipes out there for bath salts and soaps, too - maybe those instead of baked goods?
  • I make photo calendars for my dad and he loves them. Last year I painted a picture for my mom. Other than that, my homemade gifts are food.

I've actually been meaning to attempt fudge!

I have this cheesy idea (not as cheesy as Any's mix tape, but close! ;)) that I'll make wedding favors that are one part Canada, one part Arizona -- so, maple fudge and cactus candy, or something like that.  I could use this as an excuse to experiment...

Otherwise: no kids young enough to need supervision (unless you count my 26 year-old sister, and I frequently do />.>), no interesting hobbies like gardening on their side, and no ability to knit or sew on mine.  If it doesn't involve a glue stick and colored markers, it's probably beyond my capability.  :3

  • Oh, I like the bath salts and dog treats ideas too!  They have three little dogs.  (One of them is a Brussels Griffon/Dachshund mix, if you can believe it!  He's all kinds of adorable.)

  • Dog treats are super easy.  And you can decorate them with melted white chocolate (white chocolate doesn't contain whatever it is that is bad for dogs).

    I'm digging Martha's ideas.

Soy candles are super easy to make, too.  I bought dollar store Christmas mugs last year and filled them with soy wax.

  • FI LOVES MY CHEESINESS THANKS
  • My dad made Jef a mix CD once, but it had songs like Star Trekkin' and Fish Heads on it to mitigate the cheese...

These songs mitigated the cheese?  They are the cheese!!!  Gotta love them though!  All it was missing was the William Shatner version of "I'm too Sexy".

I second this! I was just looking at MS today for Christmas crafty gift ideas. I want to make peppermint soap and some other stuff.

However, maple fudge is delicious and is a must.
