Snarky Brides

I'm terrified because...

... I have to take the driving test tomorrow! Ahhh!

I've been trying to switch my car title and residence to TX and I just found on my DL is expired! This means when I go to apply for a TX license I have to retake the driving test including the written one and vision test. I took a practice written test online and I failed by 4%. Not good.

And advice?! I'm more nervous than I was when I was 16! DH was wonderful and picked me up a driving handbook so I can brush up on my proper driving techniques! But one piece of advice the handbook gives really threw me for a loop: Look with your eyes but see with your mind. Say what? I feel like I'd hear that in a group therapy class, not at the DMV.

  • Think about what you're doing, going to do and what could happen. At least that's how I read it.

It probably just means to really comprehend what's going on around you.  I mean we all can probably admit to mindless driving - going through the motions and whatnot.  Especially if you drive the same routes every day.

You just have to keep in mind that there's lots of other moving vehicles on the road and that you have to drive defensively.  You gotta see your surroundings and know how to handle them.

Think - but not too much :) You'll be flustered and nervous and make stupid mistakes.  You know how to drive.  You can do it ;)

    I'm most nervous about:

    a. The written test - I overthink my answers
    b. PARALLEL PARKING
    c. Backing up while looking out the back window. I always just use my mirrors.

    I'm an infamously bad driver.
  • Make sure you know what the minimum insurance requirements are for the state. When I had to get a different state license, that was one of the questions that I failed. I didn't even think to study that.
    I'm not good at feelings.

  • In terms of the written test, I always tell my kids to relax and go with their gut, so you should od the same!  Remember, if you screw up, you can always retake it, so don't put too much pressure on yourself.

For the driving test, I think AATB makes a good point.  Just be aware of what's going on around you and you;ll be fine.  After all, you already know how to drive!

    Good luck! Night, guys!
  • Good luck Nates :)

Parallel parking is fun, Jenna!  ...But I'm a pro.  My college campus provided years of practice.

  • If you are worried that you will use your mirrors too much (cos you are used to it and not look round) then set them slightly off so you have to move your head and also check out the windows to be sure of space and distance. Not too much you understand just enough to make you double check :)
    Good luck!

[QUOTE]Your license is expired already?  Mine is good until 2052. LOL. Anyways, don't sweat it too much, just drive like you normally do and maybe practice the parallel parking a bit, you'll be fine.

Whoa! Jealous!! I took the written test today and passed but daayyuumm was it hard! Much harder than the one I took when I was 16. But I was in Oklahoma where we don't even get our cars inspected so that might be saying something.

I'm making DH take me to practice PP, but I'm pretty paranoid. I had to schedule my test for Friday so I have a week or so to practice. I wish I could have just gotten it over with.
  • I would be more worried about the written test so yay that you got that out of the way :) I just hated all of the distance questions.
How far from a fire hydrant must you park?
    a) 20 feet
    b) 25 feet
    c) 30 feet

Um I'll just park in the nearest marked spot ok?

I cannot parallel park, I'd be screwed if I had to do it for a test. I also cannot backup very well either. Go go small town driving school.
