Snarky Brides

Random/Dumb Question

I'm a runner and now my dog goes running with me. We're in MN.

Do dogs need snow boots for winter running? 10 degrees is pretty cold for those little piggies. On the other hand, wolves (dogs) have lived in the northern part of the North American wilderness long before I started asking dumb questions.

Anywho, what would you do?

Re: Random/Dumb Question

  • We don't put booties on our dog, but she's on trails and not pavement.  She does just fine in th snow.

  • I don't have an answer because snow isn't an issue where I live, but I imagine that the breed makes a difference.  I'd worry a lot more about a Chinese Crested in the cold than I would a Siberian Husky!

  • Not a dumb question at all!  My dog does fine in the snow, but he finds the road salt and de-icer excruciating.  He limps and wont weight bear until it's cleaned off.  So I don't walk him on the road.
  • Like J said, you need to see what bothers your dog, if anything.  My dog is fine in the snow (although he needs a sweater).  The salt, however, irritates him.  He will not wear booties, though, so they might not be an option anyway.  I say test it out first.
  • My mom bought her dog some booties and she hates them. Maybe get some cheap shoes and see if your dog likes them.
And the whole time, my future husband was in the room...... image image

[QUOTE]We had snow booties for my dog growing up, but it wasn't because her feet got cold (in WI) it was because the snow and salt would ball up between her paw pads and hurt her, and the salt would dry out her pads so they cracked and bled.  So I would say, if it seems like the salt and snow bothers your dog, go for it, if not, it's probably not necessary!

agreed....we watch our dogs paws when we are up in WI because there is a WHOLE LOT more salt used so I just keep watch on her pads - some dogs are more sensitive than others
