Cost of Security System?

The house we're under contract on is hooked up for a Brinks home security system.  I was wondering if anyone has a home security system and about how much a month they cost.  It would be nice to have that added sense of safety.

Try Smith Thompson.  That is the company that is currently being used at the house we have under contract, and who we plan on using as well.  It's around $200 a year if you pay for the whole year in advance.  Our house insurance discounts would more than pay for that service, so that was a nice surprise.  :)I had never heard of them and they were recommended to me by multiple people, so I believe they are reliable.  They don't have contracts like some companies, so it's a lot easier to cancel the service if you need to.  Although if you already have a Brinks system installed at the house, I'm not sure if it will cost you extra to go with another company if your keypads need replacing.

Hmm..I'll check into that!  It would be nice if we could use the keypad we already have and just shop around for the best deal for security system companies!

Stick with what they already have. It is cheaper than having to do an install. We have brinks and pay about $25/month.

I can't remember what company we have off the top of my head but we pay 49 dollars monthly. It was a free install buy we are locked in for two years.

I think we can handle $25 a month if it saves us a little bit of sanity and well being! :)  Thanks for the info, ladies!

Totally worth it! I have always paid between $30 and $45/month- I have motion detectors in current house so it is a bit more. I have Protection One- they could have used my old key pad but I got more features with an upgraded keypad- such as ability to arm and disarm remotely/online which I really like.

Btw, you're required to have a home phone line in order to have a security system...

I have a friend in Mckinney with an alam system and no home phone..

Oh geez, I hadn't even thought about having a home phone!  We tried that once in our old townhome and it didn't work quite well...  :)  But maybe since it's a one story home, I won't have to worry about not hearing the phone ring.

Mariah, I don't even know the phone number to our home line, nor have I ever answered it. We got set up on a dirt cheap plan, we can only make 25 outgoing calls a day. :)

Ugh, I'm an idiot. What I meant to say was that we can only make 25 outgoing calls a month.

Some companies don't require a home phone anymore. I don't recall which ones, but I'm pretty sure Brinks was not one of them. I have also noticed that most companies will use an existing keypad from any company. We have been looking into getting a security system for our home, so I have done a little research. Just try looking online. GL

I do not have a home phone and have a alarm system. BTW it is Monitronics. As long as you are willing to put there signs outside your house (they look like a normal security sign) they will install your system for free with free system and you are agreed to be lock in for 2 years like previously said. It does appear to be more then Brinks though.

And on the phone.. we got a landline but for $200 (flat fee) we had the option to buy basically a perminent cell phone box thing that would allow the alarm to work.

I second Smith Thompson! They are way cheaper than most other companies and of the two times that we have had our alarm go off (in 7 years) they called us within 2 minutes... I want to say the first time was about 90 seconds and the second time the phone was ringing before we turned the alarm off! They call our cell phones and we don't have landline service and so they installed something that works off of our internet connection. Installation was free!
