Kind of weird question regarding a party

I am having a house warming party in late August (which means I need to get my asss in gear with decorating) and had a weird thought. Right now we don't have a lot of seating in the house. We have a dining room table upstairs with 12 chairs, a computer chair downstairs and a section sofra that could fit 3 people.
If you were a guest at a house warming party would you be put off if there weren't a lot of comfortable seating? Would it be worth renting/borrowing some lawn chairs to have indoors?
I'm hoping/assuming there would be about 10-20 people in the house at any given time.

Re: Kind of weird question regarding a party

  • Hmm, Do you have an floor pillows? Or an ottoman that could double as seating? I have no problem with a mistmatch of chairs, I just prefer I'm not stuck on the floor.
  • When we had parties in the past, not many people sat. They either stayed in the kitchen where the food and beer were, hung around outside, or stood in clusters of people. But that's normal for them, they aren't into more personalized, private chats. They go all over the place and yeah, they don't care where they end up sitting.

I personally wouldn't care where I sat, couch, lawn chair, pillow on the floor. But, I would want to make sure that there were enough seats for people, just in case.

  • I think you will be okay. A lot of people like to congregate in the kitchen and usually lean against cabinets/countertops and stuff.

  • Hmm maybe we'll borrow some deck furniture from my parents too so people can mingle outside (although the way the heats been yeah right).

Omg...swiveling tv stand on tv...I want it...we need it...
  • To be honest, at my cocktail parties, we usually don't have seats for everyone. If it's, like, a superbowl or an oscar party, we'll only invite the number of people we have chairs for.

We have a couch and loveseat (5 seats total), 4 dining chairs, and 2 desk chairs in the house. We've had around/over 20 people in the house before. Some people stay seated, some rotate in and out of seats. I arrange the dining chairs in the living room around the couches and coffee table and pull the dining table out a bit to set up food in the dining room. It works pretty well.

  • I usually don't sit at parties so I wouldn't mind a bit. I can't picture everyone sitting all at the same time ya know? Ditto pp that people tend to gather/hang out in the kitchen.

  • You could throw down beach towels or blankets and a few pillows in an area with some buckets of ice/beer/drinks so as to give people a seating area (but not randomly as it would look like you just didn't put away your laundry.) Otherwise agree with PP - people will stand around and lean on walls, sit on stairs, counters, etc. It's okay - at housewarmings no one expects you to have enough furniture yet.

  • Yea, everyones making good points, I guess I don't really sit, I wander. In my head I'm imagining like a tupperware party where yes, I'd want a chair.
  • And yeah, scheduling a party was a great way to get our decorating done the last time we moved. :-)

I have never been to one.  Is that sad?

  • I would imagine most people will be outside, Katie. The area you moved to is gorgeous! :D I think it's appropriate to ask people to bring a chair for outside seating just in case.

  • Note: When Sco receives invite she cannot complain about seeing "seating limited, bring outdoor chairs" on the bottom ;)

    What's your email btw.
  • PS-same problem, just moved into our place, don't own a lot of seating.  (I'm asking a few close friends to bring some folding chairs to add to the seating we have).  But the last few people we had over, just kinda' congregated in the kitchen around the island.  And I have yet to be at housewarming/open house/good old-fashioned houseparty where I was like...OMG! Could you believe it!?! there wasn't enough seats...scandelous!!!

People will more likely than not just kinda' float around

  • I confess to going out and buying a folding table and chairs when I threw a birthday party for H. My justification was that we could use it as a kiddie table if and when we ever host Thanksgiving.

  • Don't worry about it.  I'll just sit in your lap if I really need to.

    Woot!

Ok second logistics question: the animals.

The cat is getting locked in the bedroom so I don't have to worry about her going anywhere. If anyone wants to see the bedroom I'll take them in so we can keep an eye on her. Should I put the dog in the nursery and do the same? Right now it's just a painted room with a dresser and the cat box so nothing to really see.

Yeah. We put the cats in the den when people come and lock them up. That way they won't get outside and people with allergies will be... more okay than they would be otherwise.

  • See. This is how it'll work. I bring my chair, Tide & Taryn sit in my lap and Tide's DH brings his own chair for himself. Problem solved!

I'll give you my email on fb.
