Speaking of wedding dresses...

Is it bad that I haven't been shopping for one yet? I had plans to go a few weeks ago and that fell through, so I'm planning to go this weekend. I know they can take a long time to come in after being ordered and if you add alterations, even longer for them to be ready. How far out from your wedding date did you get your dress and what's the minimum amount of time to have before you should definitely have picked one?

Re: Speaking of wedding dresses...

  • I got engaged nearly eight months ago and didn't order my dress until June... lol, but then again, maybe I'm not the right person to advise you on this :)

However if my dress got here when it was supposed to, it would have been here in September, two months before my wedding.

  • I ordered and paid for mine in April and it still isn't in yet.  Thankfully I have until May of next year.  I say do it early so you don't have any issues.

  • I went shopping in September, I think, for an April wedding. It was the only time we could coordinate our schedules within a decent timeframe. They said it would take 5 months for the dresses to come in, but it only took 2.
  • Thanks Ladies, I was beginning to feel really anxious, like I was cutting it really close.  Not saying I should take my time, but at least I know I have a bit more time to get it done.

Nates - I am definitely going this weekend b/c I already made the plans with FSIL and FMIL. Can't back out now!

I will definitely let you know where I go. I think this weekend we're sticking with Orange County, NY. Depending on whether that's successful, I want to make an appt for the following weekend at Bijou since I've heard such good things about them.

I really never paid attention to designers before, but I'm seriously loving a lot of Maggie Sottero dresses all of a sudden. I just want to get it over with.
  • I went shopping 11 months out in August,  and my dress should be in in December, about 7 months out.  I could have waited another couple months, but it will be nice to not have to rush through alterations, and I'll have plenty of time to pick out shoes and accessories once I have the dress.  If it helps, I read somewhere I think that November was the best time to buy wedding dresses (I'm not sure why...maybe the prices?).

Wow, I didn't realize you planned the wedding so quickly! Your dress situation scares me to be honest. It sucks that it happened to you and I will be a raging mess if something like that happens to me.
  • Try not to stress though.  What happened to me doesn't happen to everyone - and you definitely have time to work with :)

  • Oh, I heard awesome things about Bijou.  Yeah, I just stayed local to me and I found a ton of stuff.  I was worried that I would hate everything (even though I shop often enough to know what I like immediately :P) and wouldn't find a dress that I liked.  I'm paranoid like that.
  • Make sure to try on a dress or two that you wouldn't think you like too! My mom pulled one off the rack because she liked the flower embroidery on the bodice. It was everything I wasn't looking for (strapless, A line - I think, more simple). I tried it on, fell it love and took it home.

Heck, at 10 months, 1 week, and 5 days... I wasn't even engaged yet

I  bought mine in Sept.and it came in 4 weeks later. So I had it by Oct. and started alterations on late March for my May wedding.

ETA: it was a brand new season, so I think thats why it came in so fast. No one was ordering it yet.

I think I'm actually going to go to DB in Middletown. I know the area mostly, but not as far as bridal shops are concerned, So I'm basically going to places that FMIL and FSIL suggest since they live in the area and FSIL went to places for her wedding a few years ago.
  • Where is your actual wedding, in Orange?

    No, Rockland.
  • I ordered mine in February, and it arrived in August, so it took 6 months.  My wedding was in October, so it arrived just in time.  8 months is usually plenty of time for it to arrive and for alterations.

  • Please don't wait too long.  I had a terrible time getting mine in and I wish I would have gone earlier. I had a short engagement though. It held up doing a lot of things waiting on the dress.  Getting the right shoes, the undergarments the jewelry.  I have been running around like made the past few weeks to get mine. I had from June and it showed up late Oct. and I had a rush on it.  In my mind it's one less headache.
