Cupcake price to high????

We are having a friend of the family (who is a professional baker) make our cupcakes for the wedding instead of a normal wedding cake. We are guessing around 300 guests will come to the wedding so we thought 2per person just to be save.  The only problem is, my step mother made it sound like she would give us a discount cause she has be great friends with her.  And even when I spoke with the lady she said that the price would be no big deal and not to worry about it.  I got an email from her today about how much each cupcake would be and she said $3.50 per cupcake!! I'm not sure if thats normal for the cost of a cupcake, but I'm kind of freaking out! Thats $2,100 just for the cupcakes! My uncle is making the stand so that should make the cost less and my cousins will be the ones restocking the cupcakes so it's not like she has to stay.

Is $2,100 a normal amount for cupcakes??? I'm I freaking out for no reason?? Our date is July 9th so I feel like it might be to late to change if it is too much. HELP?

This is a question your local board would be able to answer.  That said, how elaborate are the cupcakes?  Think of them as 600 little cakes that have to be decorated.  It's never the cake itself that costs a fortune, it's the work that goes into decorating it.

You don't need two per person if they are normal size cupcakes.  Cut your order in half, but that is still a lot of money!

I would say ordering maybe 50 or 75 extra cupcakes would be more than enough extras. It does seem high, but I definitely agree that it could depend on the amount of work on each one.

$3.50 per cupcake is definitely high.  At the boutique cupcake shops here in Atlanta, they charge $2.50 per cupcake, and they are decorated beautifully, large full tops, and super tasty.  I suggest you price around (although it is short notice.)

We are having cupcakes at our wedding, and because we ordered 100, the bakery gave us a discount to $1.15 per cupcake leaving our total cost at $115.00.  They are also going to have custom gum paste toppers on each cupcake.

I don't think the price is high at all, but I think 2 cupcakes per person is too much.  Some will eat 0, some 1 and some 2 (personally, I think anyone that eats more than 1 helping of cake/cupcakes at a wedding is rude).
 
Before you freak out completely you are only expected to supply 1 dessert per guest.  You are expecting 300 guests so the total for the cupcakes would be $1050.  Ask the woman what that includes.  Maybe she was going to use decorative sugar flowers or special liners that could be done away with to help reduce cost.  Call other bakeries in your area to see what they are charging.  Make sure you are comparing apples to apples though.  For example, this woman may charge $3.50/cupcake and an extra $0.50/sugar flower but was going to give you the sugar flowers for free.  Bakery B charges $3.00/cupcake and an extra $0.50/sugar flower.  With the sugar flower you end up paying the same from both bakeries.  Without, you save $150 (not much).  See if filling or speciality flavors are included in the $3.50/cupcake price.  Make sure you ask when pricing the product if fillings/speciality flavors are extra.  Ask about delivery/set up fees.  It is not uncommon for bakeries to charge a set up fee for cupcakes because unlike cake it is not a "drop and go" dessert.
 
Think about this, when you go to a restaurant you pay about $6-$10 for dessert (mid grade restaurant - nothing fancy).  That is not considered pricey until you are paying for 300 of them.  $3.50/dessert serving is not bad.  Also, in the end the cupcakes are probably one of the cheapest per guests items you will be puchasing for the wedding.  I know, I planned my wedding 4 years ago and paid $52/person for just the food (not including the individual wedding cakes each guest received - don't ask what that cost).

How is it rude to eat more than one serving if there is extra?

I think you're ordering way too many cupcakes. After dinner, I might split ONE cupcake with my H.

Here, cupcakes are like $4-$5/pp, so yeah, that's typical. For cake it's more like $5-$6/slice.

Wow - glad I don't live in you guys' area.  You can get a custom fondant-covered, gum paste decor, five tier wedding cake for $1100 - $1500.

If there is extra, fine.  But you won't there is extra until the end of the wedding.  At that time I don't think it is rude to take a second helping.  But, when people take several pieces of cake/cupcakes right away because they want more or want to try all the flavors available - I think that is very rude.
 
Again, I feel that a bride is responsible for providing one piece of cake/cupcake for each guest.  Only once everyone has had a chance to get dessert do I think someone should get a second helping if available.  Otherwise another guest will have to go without because some guests are pigs and have no manners.
