How to do a mashed potato bar well?

Hi there,

I am thinking about doing a mashed potato bar for a 7pm wedding. Have any of you done a mashed potato bar or been to one that was well-executed? I am definitely thinking martini glasses or nice serving dishes, and cheese, green onions, bacon, etc. Then maybe chicken kabobs and salads? Any ideas?

  • Have you thought about doing a savory and sweet mashed potatoe bar with idaho potatoes and sweet potatoes?  With the sweet potatoes you can do marshmallows, cinnamon, brown sugar etc.

I think that martini glasses would be a nice option to serve them in just because they are a bit easier to carry around then a bowl that may be a bit hot due to the potatoes.

Also, is this bar for appetizers or is it part of the dinner buffet?

I'm planning on having a mashed potato bar as well, and I'm stealing the savory-sweet idea with the sweet potatoes, as will as OP's martini glass idea. Thanks guys!

Haha, anyway. To add to your options to mix in with the regular potatoes, make sure garlic, chives, butter and sour cream are options as well.
  • I like this idea!  Have you thought about roasted or candied pecans for the sweet potatoes?  Maybe you can have bacon, grilled/sauteed onions and mushrooms, cheese, chilli, or grilled/sauteed bell pepper for the idaho potatoes.
    yummy!

  • The couple I have been to had sweet potatoes, and then a varitey of others--including purple mashed potatoes.  For toppings I have seen the ones listed above as well as lobster and chourico (portuguese sausage).  It was done with martini classes and was fabulous!
  • I just went to a wedding on May 5th that had this for their cocktail hour.  They called it a Mashed Potini Bar.. and it was a huge hit. They served mashed potatos in a martini glass and then you could add your own toppings. The toppings inculded bacon, carmalized onion, mushrooms, shreded cheddar cheese, scallions, minced garlic, and a demi glace. SO GOOD :)
  • This sounds so good. I really want some mashed potatoes now!
  • I'm doing this at my wedding during cocktail hour. We are serving in martini glasses and calling them Mashtini's!
