Groom's cake

I was thinking about surprising my fiance and getting a custom made groom's cake, but when do I give it to him? At the rehearsal dinner (which i have no idea where that will be yet) or at the wedding along with our wedding cake? Same table?

Does he have an opinion?  I am asking because FI knows he wants a cake and knows what he wants it to look like.  I'd never want to surprise him because this is pretty much one of the few things in the wedding that he gets total and complete say in.  Some people have it at the rehearsal dinner but I want all of the guests to see it so it will be next to the wedding cake at the reception.

You could do it at either the rehearsal dinner or at the reception, it's up to you. I am having the groom's cake at the reception. FI already knows about it and I want all our guests to see it. I am having two seperate cake tables. I'm having the grooms cake on the left side of the sweetheart table and the wedding cake will be to the right of the table.

He's pretty involved with everything so far - that's why I wanted to surprise him with a cake. It's a little something that I can do without him knowing... and it would be based around his favorite sports team, so I can't go wrong with that! I'm thinking the rehearsal dinner would be the best place. Too much cake at the reception would take away from everyone having a good time!!

I am surprising my FI too...it will be at the reception, but it won't be on the same table as our cake (we are having cupcakes with just a smaller cake on the top of the display for us to cut) I adjusted the about of cake to accomadate for the grooms cake so we wouldn't have cake overload. It will be his favorite sports teams logo and his favorite flavor. His parents, me and my MOH are the only ones that know about it so at some point during the reception (probably when we go to cut our small cake) we will have someone bring it out and surprise him.
