Is everyone having a hair trial?

If so, how soon before the wedding should I have mine done?

I don't know that there's any particular time for this. I would imagine most people do it a lot sooner, but I'm having my hair trial only three weeks before the wedding!

my wedding is may 14th and i did my trial in january. i just did it then for convenience and to make sure that if, for some reason, i didn't like it i could find another person

Most brides will use their hair and make-up trials for the bridal photos.

I think it varies for everyone.  I had mine in October for my April wedding.

I think generally it's a few months before the wedding but it's different for everyone.  I actually did my first trial 6 months before the wedding--and it was terrible so I had to find a new MUA and start over.  I did my second one 4 months before the wedding, simply because that was over the summer when my MUA wasn't so busy.

I didn't have one but regret it. I just assumed since I had showed my hair girl the picture of the style I wanted and she said she could do it, that I wouldn't need one. It didn't end up turning out how I wanted it but we were running out of time so I just had to deal with it and fix it how I wanted it when I got ready.

ETA: Also make sure you take your veil or any hair accessories! I discovered once I had put my veil in that all of the beading that was touching my hair that was down was pulling out all of my curls. If I had done a trial with the veil I would have known that and probably would've gotten a different veil!

This is where you have your hair done as you will wear it on the wedding day.  It is done with makeup as well.  It is your opportunity to see how you will look on your wedding day, see if you like your stylist, and change anything that you don't like.
