Getting in Shape

Need help

Backstory:
Last year I lost a fair bit of weight, but I got lazy over summer and lazier over winter and have gained 15lbs of it back. I would like to fix this. Problem though is that in September I realized that me and dairy werent quite getting along (bloating, stomach cramps, etc) so I cut it out. Since then, my stomach issues have gone away and as an added bonus the pimples I used to get on my chin have disappeared (and ive noticed they do pop up again if I have even a little dairy, a bit of cheese, sourcream, whatever). Because of this, I am not willing in any way shape or form to add dairy back into my diet.

Ive been counting calories again and coming across some issues, i am really struggling to eat enough (generally eating between 1150-1300 - though not losing) which in turn deters me from working out. I dont want to just load on more carbs or anything not that great but I must suck at this because I cant think of other things to add that would sufficiently bump up my intake. I went back and looked at old food diaries and a lot of the extra calories I was eating at the time was dairy (milk in the morning, yogurt, cottage cheese), but since that is an option I am drawing a blank.

This is a kinda post and run because i am at work, but my general day looks like this (what I had yesterday):
B: 1 egg + whites scrambled, 1c ff soy milk + 1scoop protein powder blended with ice
S: small banana
L: salad + turkey sandwich made with 1piece of 12grain bread, jello cup, 10 almonds
S: kashi bar
D: Chicken breast, rice, veg
Usually nothing after that, I normally have a tea in the evening and that is about it.

Sooooooo any suggestions? Again, absolutely no dairy.

For 1, add the yolk back in to your second egg with breakfast.  Eggs get such a (needlessly) bad rap.  They're not evil.

What's your take on nut butters?  You could add some PB or almond butter to your snack banana.  Or just some nuts.

Do you like avocado?  I find it to be an excellent substitute for butter when spread on a sandwhich.

Also, it may be time to start to learn to like beans.

Lastly, START LIFTING AGAIN!  You'll feel so much better when you do.

I'm worried about doing any exercises if I'm not eating enough. I know how much I can burn doing a lifting session and if I only ate 1300 for the day, I would end up knocking atleast 300, putting me at 1000cal or less for the day and I know that's bad :( I'm not opposed to nut butters but I've never much been a fan of it with fruit - maybe just celery?? I still can't wrap my head around beans though, do you have any bean recipes I could try out atleast for trying sake? I normally do 2 eggs, but we only had 2 eggs left and a carton of whites, and no $ till friday so I was making do haha.

I was going to say most of this, but you could also just add sliced avocado to your turkey sandwiches too.  Or hell, eat it alone, as a snack (I sprinkle a tiny bit of salt or garlic salt on it, if I have a lime I'll squeeze a lime on it, and then scoop it out with a spoon).  Or make it into guac which I put on everything (in wraps, on salads, etc).

Could you add some PB or other nut butter to your morning shake?  You might need some extra soy  milk to thin it out again.

  • Nut butter w/ celery would work.  I'd say go for the "real" stuff to help cut down on sugar (and therefore carbs).  Almond butter is a fun change from PB and President's Choice sells it in a relatively small jar.

Working out might help you be hungrier, which would be good and could help.

As for beans, I love adding lots of beans to chili, and I'd say thats how we've been eating them the most lately, though chickpeas are just awesome sauted with some garlic (or really whatever spices tickle your fancy).

Oooooo, these are also good ideas.  I love PB in my shakes, and lovelove eating avocado w/ some salt and pepper.

I drink around 3L of water during the day @ work, and some throughtout the evening @ home.
  • I'm lactose Intolerant too. I also don't eat meat. So, that's why I don't have many meat options listed below ;-)

Every morning I have one of these three meals.

Eggo Nutrigrain Low Fat Waffles (2) with Trader Joe's Almond Butter with Flax Seed

Kix Cereal with Non-Fat Lactaid Milk

    or

Oatmeal with Almonds and a bit of brown sugar

All are right around 300 calories.

Lunches are salads, or Amy's frozen entrees. They have a lot of different varieties that are Dairy Free..... my favorite is the Verde Black Bean Tamales.
    Hope this helped!

  • Here's my favorite way to eat beans as a snack:

You can use any seasonings you like. They're crispy on the outside, and creamy on the inside.

Let me know how you like them :-)
  • Carbs aren't evil. Consider larger portions of whole grains and fruits.
