Getting in Shape

Bucket List

Just curious if anyone else is like me and attempting to get in shape is adding a list of things to your bucket list.

I used to be content with the two 5ks I have done. But I feel like thinking of dieting and exercising as training is easier. I plan on doing a triathlon next summer. However, I have also added a marathon (and all the shorter races before this) to my bucket list. Also, I want to do all of RAGBRAI. I'm not sure if people outside of Iowa know what this is, but it is basically a week bike ride across Iowa with 10,000 other people. This year I am hoping to do one day of it (which is about 50 miles) but I really want to complete a marathon, an olympic triathlon, and all of RAGBRAI before I die.

What are your goals for fitness on your bucket list?

Re: Bucket List

  • Where in Iowa are you? I just moved to Iowa CIty so I've heard all about RAGBRAI. It defnetely sounds cool to do some year. My big bucket list thing is an Ironman triathlon. I'm slowly working my way up-Olympic this summer, hopefully a half next summer.

  • I live in Coralville now (for school), but I'm actually from Dubuque so I am doing the final day of RAGBRAI this year which is Manchester to Dubuque. Are you going to do the HyVee triathlon? I want to do that next year.

  • Awesome. I want to do HyVee so bad. I've been really unlucky with timing so far. My fiance had to work that weekend last year and I didn't want to go by myself. We were all ready to sign up this year then found out his sister graduates high school that same weekend-in Michigan. Maybe next year. We're doing a different Olympic distance one near Madison the weekend after instead.

  • Lately, I've been thinking about mountain climbing (not rock climbing, I'm not agile enough for that LOL). I love to travel, so I think I'd like to make a point of climbing mountains on most (if not all) of the vacations I take. For instance, when I lived in Hawaii, I climbed the Stairway to Heaven, and it was amazing. You could see the entire island, all 360 around.

I also have a lot of non-fitness stuff on my bucket list, like take a French cooking/baking class, swim with dolphins, and learn how to sail. :)

  • I am hoping to do the HyVee triathlon next year, with a sprint triathlon sometime in between now and then.

  • My ultimate goal is to run a marathon. I've got some 5Ks and one 10K under my belt, but running has taken the back burner to the wedding. Now that the wedding is over, I'm hoping I can step up my training. I want to run the Detroit Half this November.
It would be nice to compete in a tri, but I don't see that ever happening.

  • I think it's great that you're adding to your bucket list! I never had fitness goals on mine until FI talked me into doing a 5k with him last year. I was in terrible shape and it kicked my butt but it made me realize that I want to be able to do more than that! Who knows if I'll ever do a marathon, but there are definitely more 5 and 10ks in my future :)

    GO you!
  • Oh....one thing I did add was that I want to be able to touch my toes. That might sound silly but I've lost a lot of flexibility over the years and its depressing that I honestly cannot touch my toes!
